Learn to Kill Viruses off by Using Boiling Water

When it comes to keeping you and your family safe, one method that many homeowners are using right now is boiling water. Hot water kills germs on clothing, on masks, on dishes, and even on some of the foods brought into the house.

With more homeowners looking to improve sanitation methods in the home, they’re looking for methods that have worked for thousands of years. Boiling water is one of those methods that has survived for that long, simply because it works. Using boiling water kills off many different types of viruses, germs, and bacteria. Some of the more prevalent types include:

  • E. Coli
  • Polio
  • Hepatitis A
  • Giardia
  • Most Forms of Salmonella
  • Cryptosporidium
  • Rotavirus

Hot Temperatures Can Kill Viruses

This inactivates the bacteria or germ that causes the virus in the host. For example, washing dishes in cold water can leave a significant number of bacteria behind.

However, if you wash those same dishes in hot, not boiling, water, your dishes can come out sanitized and safe to eat from. You can also wash dirty laundry on a hot cycle to kill viruses and germs that may be living in the cloth.

Do Freezing Temperatures Have the Same Impact?

If you want to kill bacteria, germs, and viruses, then you do not want to use cold temperatures. Taking an item and freezing it will only allow the particle to go dormant. This means that once the item warms back up, the virus will still be able to make you or someone in your family ill.

Instead of using cold to kill off these germs, you need to make sure that you use heat. For items that cannot go into the water, a dryer may be the next best option at killing off the particles so the item is safe to use once more.

What’s the Right Boiling Temperature?

140 fahrenheitThankfully, you do not need to go through and boil every bit of water you use if you want to keep items clean and sanitized. In order to kill off most harmful germs, bacteria, and viruses, you simply need to ensure that the water gets hot.

In this instance, hot means at least 140 degrees Fahrenheit. If the water is warmer, that is fine. However, if the water does not hit 140 Fahrenheit, there may be some living particles left behind.

If you want to ensure that your home is getting enough hot water, make sure that you have your water heater set to at least 140 degrees. That way, when you pull water from the tap, you know it will be warm enough to keep you safe.
