Wake Forest Furniture Maker Supports Breast Cancer Survivors

Wake Forest, United States - May 4, 2020 / Duvall & Co. /

Duvall & Co loves to give back. They donated their most popular table, the High Point Trestle, to be auctioned off at the Pretty in Pink Foundation Gala fundraiser for North Carolina breast cancer survivors on October 19, 2018. All of the proceeds from the online auction went to help breast cancer patients in North Carolina pay for medical treatment.

Instead of painting the underside of the custom handcrafted table red, which is the Duvall trademark, they painted it pink, the color of breast cancer awareness. At an event hosted at Wine and Beer 101 in Wake Forest, breast cancer survivors were invited to leave their signature by painting their hands white and putting the handprints on the underside of the table.

Pretty In Pink Foundation

Pretty In Pink Foundation was founded in 2004 by Dr. Lisa Tolnitch, a leading breast cancer surgeon in Raleigh, NC. The mission is to provide financial assistance to uninsured and under-insured North Carolina breast cancer patients for medical treatment, including surgery, chemotherapy administration, radiation therapy, office co-pays, and COBRA.

Pretty In Pink Foundation believes that everyone diagnosed with breast cancer is entitled to life-saving medical care. In addition, the Foundation offers a quality of life and support services that extend beyond medical expenses to make fighting the battle more manageable.

What began with assistance for ten women in Wake County has grown into helping women and men throughout North Carolina. Pretty In Pink Foundation is a not for profit 501(c)(3), and all monies raised come from grants, corporate sponsors, businesses, third-party events, and individual donations.

Through the Beyond the Ribbon program, Pretty in Pink Foundation offers supportive resources to breast cancer champions as they go through the treatment journey. Beyond the Ribbon provides special care bags to those who are newly diagnosed, preparing for surgery, beginning chemotherapy, or starting radiation treatment. Many women need prosthetic units and special pre- and post-surgery bras. Wigs, camisoles, and other items are supplied by the program. The patients receive information and referrals to other community resources. People can join the effort to provide a comfortable bag to a breast cancer champion by making a Beyond the Ribbon™ donation. For more information about Pretty In Pink, call (919) 532-0532.

Hands-On Involvement: Sewing and Quilting to Make a Difference

Sewers and quilters can become a Beyond the Ribbon™ volunteer for Pretty In Pink Foundation to make items for the comfort care tote bags. Sign up by clicking on the Volunteer tab. These items can be of support and care to anyone going through cancer treatment.

Beyond the Ribbon program needs donations of fabric, polyester fiberfill, and other supplies to make the items that go into the comfort care tote bags. This tote is the perfect size to fill with many care and support items for patients going through chemotherapy and radiation treatments. The bags are filled with a small pillow, seat belt port pillow, small lap or shoulder blanket, journal, crossword puzzles, and other comfort care items to carry to medical or other appointments.

Breast Cancer Statistics for 2020

More women are diagnosed with breast cancer than any other cancer, besides skin cancer. This year, an estimated 276,480 women in the United States will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer, and 48,530 women will be diagnosed with in situ breast cancer. An estimated 2,620 men in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer.

Currently, there are more than 3.5 million women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States. It is estimated that 42,690 deaths from breast cancer will occur this year (2020). Pretty in Pink Foundation supports the many breast cancer survivors who live in North Carolina.

Conclusion

Duvall & Co is a family-owned and operated design and build a studio in Wake Forest, NC. Using only the finest, hand-selected hardwoods, the artisans build unique furniture that is worthy of being passed down for generations. The Design Studio offers a selection of the most popular pieces, and clients can collaborate with the design team to create the perfect piece.

How did the idea of painting the underside of a table red come about? David Duvall, co-owner of Duvall & Co and furniture craftsman, explained it this way: “When my mother was a child, my grandfather crafted a table just for her and painted it bright red. That bright red table spawned the idea for us to paint the underside of our custom tables bright red. We added the handprints later. Our customers seem to appreciate the significance of the trademark. Adding the handprints makes each table a unique legacy.”
