Root canals get bad press, but they're one of the most useful dentistry procedures. The treatment saves the structure of the natural tooth. By keeping the natural teeth, patients can avoid bridges or dental implants.

When Is a Root Canal Advisable?

A root canal is necessary if infection occurs in the pulp of the tooth. The pulp is the innermost layer of your tooth. It’s responsible for feeding the tooth in its growing stages. Infection in this area is painful because of the concentration of blood and nerves.

Infection is caused by trauma to the tooth, cavities, or cracks. Patients feel pain, sensitivity to extremes of temperature, and have difficulty chewing.

It's essential to have this dealt with as quickly as possible. An infection of the pulp won't go away on its own. If left untreated, the infection can spread to the surrounding teeth or jawbone.

If the pulp is infected, patients have two options. A root canal is one. Extraction is the other, but removing the tooth is a measure of last resort. The gap in the teeth might not be noticeable, but there are good health reasons to avoid extraction.

For starters, each tooth in the mouth supports the ones next to it. If you don't replace an extracted tooth, the teeth surrounding it loses support. They'll eventually start to shift position. Of more concern, though, is that the body begins to reabsorb the bone in the area. The bone loss won't happen overnight, but it's irreversible.

Some patients may believe that it’s cheaper to extract the tooth. In the short-term, they’re right. If they work the cost of implant surgery into the equation, though, the root canal is more affordable.

How Does The Root Canal Work?

A root canal is a fairly routine procedure today. Twenty years ago, it may have been painful. With advances in modern medicine, though, this is no longer true. Dr. Hatim Hamad will anesthetize the area thoroughly before proceeding.

Once the area is numb, the endodontist drills a small hole in the tooth. They then remove the pulp from the inside of the tooth. The cavity left behind is then thoroughly rinsed and sterilized. Depending on the severity of the infection, the endodontist may ask patients to come back in a week.

This time delay may be necessary to ensure that every trace of infection has cleared. The dentist creates a temporary seal in the interim. Once the endodontist is happy with the results, they’ll seal the tooth permanently.

Once the treatment is over, the endodontist will decide on the best restorative technique for the tooth. Most of the time, patients need a crown in addition to their root canal treatment.
