Plumbing Issues That Arise From Heavy Rainfalls

It would be a little odd if someone had never heard the phrase “April showers bring May flowers.” It’s a pretty common phrase, full of hope to tell people that though it may be raining cats and dogs every day now, it will be over soon and happy, sunny days are on the other side.

Unfortunately, those April showers can turn into pretty heavy rains during the first few weeks of spring, which can impact the overall plumbing system and cause a series of issues and damages throughout the home.

Saturated Soil Causes a Big Mess

home backupsWhen spring comes around, people sprint to the closest parks and beaches they can find. They run out with their arms wide open to soak up the sun for as long as they can. Dirt and soil feel the same way about water as people feel about soaking up the warm weather.

The soil will try to absorb as much water as it can. But sometimes, it will absorb more water than it can actually handle. This causes the soil moisture to become saturated, and all voids (or pores) are temporarily or permanently filled with water.

In other words, there’s simply nowhere else for the water to go! Saturated soil can cause a few plumbing issues at home including water backups because if the soil is filled to its capacity, no additional water can be absorbed. As a result, the water will start to back up into the pipes and drains in the house.

The Dangers of Slab Leaks

Slab leaks can be incredibly dangerous. They can lead to mold growth, termite infestation, or can cause the house’s foundation to collapse. So what causes this type of leak? A slab leak forms when there’s a leak in the copper plumbing lines that run beneath the foundation of the house.

As with most plumbing leaks, there are several causes of slab leaks including corrosion, abrasion, poor installation, poor quality materials, or foundation shifts. Long, heavy rains cause the ground to become extremely muddy and slick, which can shift the house’s entire foundation. This type of shift puts extreme pressure on the pipes underneath the foundation causing them to crack and leak.

Due to the dangers of slab leaks, it’s best to call a professional right away. They’ll have advanced technology and tools on hand to listen to the frequency of the leak, determine exactly where it’s coming from, and minimize the damage to the home during the repair process.

Cracked Pipes Pose a Threat

Too much pressure on a pair of pants after eating a three-course meal can put stress on the button and pop it right off. When the water pressure is high in the home, it adds stress to the pipes and causes them to crack and leak.

Though a professional plumber could fix that one particular spot where the pipe is leaking, the issue is that the high-pressure water is flowing throughout the entire plumbing system. If it cracked in one spot, more than likely, it will crack in another. In this case, repiping the house may be the best way to avoid cracked and leaking pipes in the future.
