Dr. Karen Beckstrand - Fox Valley InstituteDr. Beckstrand enjoys working with people who would like support and guidance as they face transitions in their lives or those who are facing challenges and obstacles, such as moving, job changes, retirement, becoming an empty-nester, or dealing with divorce. She has a great deal of experience working with professionals and executives.
Feeling “stuck” or engaging in self-defeating actions can be a catalyst for change. “I believe we all follow patterns that have been taught to us, and therapy examines those teachings and patterns and brings them into focus. Together we can target values and choices, work to develop awareness, and choose new behaviors and perspectives.”

Her approach is positive, forward-focused, goal-oriented, specific, and practical. “I often use assignments.  I have noticed that my clients frequently bring notebooks and take notes during our sessions.  It is common to discuss at the close of a session what will be worked on before our next meeting to maximize the time between appointments. Either I will ask my client, or they will ask me, what should be the focus of the next week so that they can stay on task.” Those seeking a deeper understanding of who they are, what they stand for, and how they can achieve the most out of life tend to enjoy this process and look forward to participating in therapy.

Dr. Beckstrand also has special expertise in the following areas:

How to handle transitions?

Take good care of yourself. Transitions are very stressful, even if they are supposed to be happy times. You may not feel well enough to participate in your normal activities. Find something fun to do for yourself each day.

Building Healthy Friendships One Step At a Time

For the person looking for intimacy, it’s important to be sensitive of the other person. Are they being friendly but keeping a safe distance? If so, be careful not to push the relationship in a different direction. They may need time to heal. Or, they may not want to be as close to you as you may want to be to them. “The only unsinkable ship is FRIENDSHIP.”
