How HVAC Maintenance Can Help Protect Your Home & Health

Though most people forget about April when talking about allergies, they are definitely being triggered in the pinnacle month. Technically, Spring's allergy season can start as early as February, and with the amount of growth and pollination that occurs in the month of April, many allergies are going to be very agitated at that time.

Anyone who has ever suffered from seasonal allergies can tell you that breathing easy is something that they can envy. When you have allergies, you can feel like you are struggling against the odds, trying to breathe in air that is doing its best to make you cough, sneeze and wheeze.

You may even feel like you can’t get away from the issues, continuing your struggle within your home. The best thing to do for your lungs, nose, and sinuses is to perform HVAC maintenance that can help to keep allergens out of your home.

For Best HVAC Maintenance, Use Small Particle Filters

small filtersStandard filters that for your air conditioner are meant to help the equipment run properly, they are not meant to help you breathe easier. Once you jump into the world of filters, you will get drawn into acronyms and numbers and it all gets very confusing very quickly.

Generally, you will see fiberglass, flat-paneled air filters as ones that come with your equipment. These air filters are not going to help filter smaller particles out of the air. They will only collect larger particles and leave the smaller, more dangerous particulates to get through.

The best small particle filters that generally can be used on a non-commercial system without modifications being made to the equipment are generally pleated material filters. Pleated material filters can be purchased in a range of efficiencies, the lowest filtering out large and medium particles up to the highest that will filter out even the smallest of contaminants (ie-smoke, smog, and other microscopic particles). Many pleated filters are compatible with HEPA air filters but more affordable.

The Highest Protection = HEPA Filters

HEPA stands for high-efficiency particulate air filters. This is a mechanical filter made of mesh that forces air through it, and then traps the most minuscule particles in its net, truly filtering the air. One thing you can be sure of if you are looking at a filter that is marketed as a HEPA filter is that the product will work. To be branded HEPA, it must be tested and approved under the EPA’s guidance.

In order to be HEPA, it has to filter out 99.7% of particulates measuring .3 microns or larger. To put it in perspective, bacterium measure .3, with oxygen measuring .0005. So if you are suffering from allergies to certain spores, most of which range upwards of the 1-micron measurement, this filter will definitely keep your air much more breathable.

HEPA filters work by trapping contaminants in their complex web of fibers. HEPA filters work in one of four ways: Diffusion, Inertial Impaction, Interception or Sieving. The larger the particle the more likely it will be trapped by inertial impaction and/or sieving - they either crash into the fibers or are trapped when they attempt to push through Medium particles will be intercepted by fibers. The small particles are diffused as they travel in the filter and will eventually be trapped by fibers.

HEPA filters often are not graded for regular residential equipment. If you are in the need of the high air quality they will provide you, the best thing you can do is to call in the professionals.

Always Remember to Keep Your Vents Clean

vent cleaningNo matter the type of filter you have, your vents will collect dirt and other particles over time. If left uncleaned, no matter how good your filter is, the collection of dust, dirt, and allergens on the vents will be blown around by your HVAC system, this is why you need to improve your home's ventilation

Proper HVAC maintenance will include regular cleaning of your vents. A general clean should be done approximately once a month. First, turn off your system. Then use protective gear to protect your eyes and face from falling particles. Then either use a dry cloth or duster to dust your intake and outtake vents.

When you have wiped them thoroughly, you should use the dust extension on your vacuum to fully clean them out. A more extensive cleaning should be done twice a year. Doing it as part of your big seasonal maintenance should be easy to remember. If you feel like you need help, do not hesitate to call in the pros. They are experts at making systems work to their optimum levels, and you can guarantee it will be done correctly and efficiently the first time.
