How One Louisville, KY Mediator Is Settling Mediation Cases in Unsettling Times

Louisville, United States - April 4, 2020 / Bixler W. Howland, P.S.C. /

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, in-person mediation services have temporarily been suspended to abide by CDC social distancing and stay at home directives intended to help prevent the spread of the virus. Court systems are closed, and in-person office visits have been halted.

To continue providing skilled meditation services to the community, Bixler W. Howland, P.S.C. is now operating online via Zoom conferencing. Online conferencing technology enables Mr. Howland to continue settling mediation cases, and clients can achieve resolutions that would otherwise have to wait until the social distancing restrictions have been lifted.

Adapting to irregular circumstances is an excellent example of the problem-solving skills that Bixler Howland regularly uses as a mediator. Of the new online services, he says, "We are all making the best of these unusual times, and Zoom was effective in place of an in-person mediation. We were able to conduct an opening session and then set up "breakout rooms" to conduct private sessions with each side. While many of us are working from home and unable to meet face to face, I have dates available to conduct mediations with Zoom while we work through this crisis and work for a resolution for your case!"

Mediation is a process in which parties attempt to resolve their dispute with the assistance of an impartial, third-party person who is trained in dispute resolution. Through mediation, clients can evaluate settlement possibilities without the pressure of a jury waiting in the courthouse. As a neutral party whose only interest is to help resolve a situation, Bixler W. Howland seeks to provide the involved parties with the opportunity to assess the strengths and weaknesses of their case.

In 2014, Mr. Howland went through training through the Indiana Office of Administration and Continuing Legal Education and became a certified mediator of the Indiana Mediation Registry. While there is no license required to be a mediator, he keeps his certification active and regularly attends continuing education. The goal is to sharpen his skills and exchange strategies in negotiations to further his ability to assist parties in reaching resolutions in their disputes.

Throughout his legal career, Bixler W. Howland has practiced a wide range of cases, from personal injury and wrongful death cases to real estate issues and estate disputes. He has had the relatively rare experience of representing both plaintiffs and defendants in these matters. He has also litigated contract and commercial disputes, business-related issues, and probate matters. Because of his experience, Mr. Howland brings a singularly unique perspective to every case that he mediates.

A practitioner of civil trial law since 1976, Bixler W. Howland is an experienced attorney and mediator licensed to practice law in Indiana and Kentucky. Mr. Howland handles the following mediation cases: personal injury, real estate disputes, contract disputes, wrongful death, professional liability, and probate disputes.
