HVAC Tools and How They Work

Although many homeowners know about the jobs that HVAC technicians do, they often wonder about the types of tools that they use. The purpose of this article is to talk about the many different essential and specialized tools that are necessary to safely and correctly perform any HVAC job, from simple air filter replacements to evaporator coil services. Let’s take a peek at everything that should be carried in a trained HVAC professionals toolbelt.

HVAC Tools: The Essentials

essential toolsSome of the most important HVAC tools for any job don’t look different from what most homeowners have in their homes already. The essential tools that most HVAC professionals use include hammers, screwdrivers (with insulated handles to protect from electrocution), pliers (open-face, needle-nose, wire-strippers, channel-lock, and linesman), and wrenches (pipe wrenches and crescent wrenches, most commonly).

They are used for a huge variety of different jobs, and no prepared technician should come to a job without them. Most HVAC technicians also bring a caulk gun to the job, to help seal up cracks and holes that let air out of the home.

Another essential tool is an extension cord. Not all homes have direct access to the area where the job needs to be done, and bringing an extension cord can help the technician reach the areas they need to get to without worry. Other essential HVAC tools are tape measures and a flashlight.

HVAC Tools: Specialized Equipment

In addition to the essential HVAC tools, technicians also have specialized tools like a power drill. One of the most important is the multimeter. This tool checks for any electrical current prior to starting a job, and notifies the technician if any voltage is present to reduce the possibility of electrocution. A multimeter can be used on outlets, switches, and wires as needed.

Another tool commonly used is the thermometer. Obviously temperature regulation is an essential part of any HVAC technician’s job, so a thermometer that is both portable and accurate is necessary. Also, as plenty of HVAC jobs require cutting efficiently, they often use a reciprocating saw (also commonly known as a Sawzall). It can cut through a variety of different materials, like wood, drywall, sheet metal, and pipes.

Manifold gauges are also often used in HVAC work. A manifold gauge can help detect leaks when the technician is recharging air conditioner units or the removal of refrigerant. One final of the specialized HVAC tools commonly used is a pump. Many jobs require removing moisture from lines before working on them, and a quality pump is the best way to do that.

Safety Precautions with HVAC Tools

Any conversation about HVAC tools also needs to include important safety precaution tools that should be taken while using them. The most important items that should be worn by any technician homeowners’ hire include safety gloves and slip-resistant shoes. These protect the technicians from burns, cuts, and falls.

Depending on the job, technicians may also need to wear eye protection goggles, a hard hat, and a respirator. Any licensed and knowledgeable technician will bring these with them to the job. Earplugs are also recommended for louder jobs.
