What Is a Board Certified Orthodontist?

Board certification is a voluntary credential that demonstrates a remarkable level of dedication to providing exceptional orthodontic care and maintaining that standard with a lifetime of continued education.

After completing an undergraduate degree and attending an accredited dental school, an orthodontist continues to a residency program for several additional years of specialized training.

Upon completion, an orthodontist can elect to become board certified. This requires the successful completion of the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) written and clinical examinations. Board certification requires hundreds of additional hours of preparation to test judgment, skill, and knowledge, to demonstrate the highest quality of orthodontic care.

A board-certified Orthodontist, also known as a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, has been voluntarily examined by his or her peers on the basis of knowledge and clinical skills. Becoming board certified signifies the orthodontist’s pursuit of continued proficiency and excellence in orthodontics.

In addition to passing these stringent exams, a board-certified orthodontist must renew their certification every 10 years.

The ABO is the only orthodontic specialty board recognized by the American Dental Association and the American Association of Orthodontists.
