RainTight Now Offers Spray Insulation to Increase Energy Efficiency

cold house

With winter in full swing, keeping a home warm can be a challenge and run up those heating bills. Insulating the walls and floors can greatly help keep the space warm with less demand on the furnace. Now there's a solution -- spray insulation offered by RainTight!

Heat can escape the uninsulated walls of a home at around 30-40 percent. It escapes at a lower rate of less than 25 percent through the roof, windows, and floors. Heat is always moving from warmer areas to cooler ones. The transfer of thermal energy cannot be stopped completely, but it can be minimized with the help of sufficient insulation.

Purpose of Insulation

energy loss

Insulation creates a barrier between the interior surfaces and the air temperature outdoors. It slows the rate of heat transfer and loss. When it’s cold, its job is to stop the flow of heat out of the building. In warmer weather, its purpose is to slow the movement of heat into the building.

The loss of energy in a home is affected by the quality of the insulation in its walls and floors, as well as the size and efficiency of the home's windows.  If the home is without insulation, maintaining a comfortable temperature can be a challenge.

A well-insulated home is energy-efficient and needs less heating and cooling from the HVAC system, which saves utility costs. How much energy and money saved depends on the size of the home and type of insulation. Spray insulation is a good barrier that helps prevent energy loss.

Spray insulation creates an air-tight seal to prevent air from escaping through small holes and cracks.  It can also block water and moisture from entering those cracks, creating an impermeable barrier. Since excess water and moisture can cause mold and mildew, insulation will prevent those from occurring as well.

Don't forget about insulating the flooring because energy can escape through the floor as well as walls. Floors provide a solid surface to contain and hide quality insulating material.

How Much Insulation Is Needed?

The U.S Department of Energy offers insulation recommendations for eight different climate zones.  These are guidelines on insulating spaces and surfaces in homes. The standard of measurement for insulation is known as an R-value. The higher the R-value, the more effective the insulation. R-values are based on the type, density, and thickness of the insulation. The end result of having insulation is running the HVAC system less, thus reducing the largest energy expense in most homes.
