How to Remove Foul Odors from Your Washing Machine

Washing machine smells are a common complaint from homeowners in just about any part of the country. There are many different causes of this very well-known odor, and many of them can be fixed with products already found around the home.

While some homeowners may replace their appliance out of pure desperation, knowing some of the more common causes can help you locate the problem on your own, finding a more cost-effective solution. This article will discuss some of the more common causes of washing machine smells, and what you can do to prevent them altogether.

Soap Scum Buildup Is Never Good

soap scumSoap scum can build up on the inside of a washing machine, and cause a tell-tale mildew smell that can drive some homeowners crazy. This is caused by the detergent sticking to the inside of the agitator when it is not getting washed away by the rinse cycle. White vinegar is the easiest solution to combat this problem.

Once monthly, the homeowner can add anywhere between two to four cups of vinegar directly into the washing machine. For harder soap scum problems, a mixture of half white vinegar and half water should be sprayed onto the walls of the washing machine and allowed to sit for an hour or so before running a cycle. Homeowners can also scrub down the inside of the machine with a clean toilet brush.

There is also a simple trick to see if the machine is being overloaded with detergent or clothing. A clean towel should be placed inside the washing machine tub before it should be run on a small load with hot water, without detergent. After just a few minutes of agitation, open the machine. If there are already suds in the tub, too much detergent is being used.

Avoid Leaving Wet Clothing In The Washing Machine

Time is hard to come by. Most people have started a load of laundry in the washing machine only to get distracted and forget to transfer it to the dryer. However, leaving wet clothing in the washing machine can cause that musty smell that is all too familiar.
There is an easy fix, though.

Again, homeowners can run two cups of white vinegar through the detergent dispenser. The washing machine should then be run through a full cleaning cycle. Once that is complete, the washing machine should be run again with the hottest water temperature and on the highest possible setting, with the addition of a half-cup of regular baking soda into the drum.

After that is done, the whole machine should be wiped down. This fix plus simply monitoring laundry habits so that wet clothing is not allowed to sit in the tub for too long can take care of a smelly home issue.

A Hidden Clog Could Also Be The Issue

One way to solve this clogging issue is by simply removing the drain pipe and pouring a cup of hot water down the drain. This should help dislodge any clogs and scum. If that doesn’t work, it might be time to call a professional.

Those that don’t feel comfortable working with plumbing or have no prior knowledge should contact a plumber. Any clogs should be resolved by the help of a plumbing professional in order to be removed correctly.
