Early Orthodontic Evaluation from our Durham Orthodontic Office

durham, United States - November 23, 2019 / Wilson Orthodontics /

You may think that orthodontics is primarily for teenagers, but in reality, early orthodontic evaluations have the most impact on young children's lives. The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that children see an orthodontist as early as age seven. Early evaluation doesn’t necessarily mean treatment, but Dr. Wilson and our orthodontic office in Durham, believe some children greatly benefit from the opportunity to address developmental concerns while still in the early stages.

Watch Out For Warning Signs

At age seven, bite issues become noticeable as permanent, adult teeth begin to erupt.

Dental issues can happen naturally or as a result of oral habits, like thumb-sucking and mouth breathing. Early evaluation by Dr.Wilson and his expert team at Wilson Orthodontics can fully assess your child’s specific needs.

Here are some warning signs that your child may need early evaluation and treatment:

  • Early or late loss of baby teeth (your child should typically start losing teeth around age five, and will have all permanent teeth around age 13)
  • Difficulty chewing and/or biting
  • Mouth breathing
  • Your child continues sucking his or her thumb after age five
  • Speech impediments
  • Protruding teeth (the top teeth and the bottom teeth extend away from each other)
  • Teeth that don’t come together in a normal manner or even at all
  • Shifting of the jaw when your child opens or closes his or her mouth (crossbite)
  • Crowded front teeth around age seven or eight

In many cases, braces are still needed later in life, but early evaluation can shorten and simplify the process. It’s important to note that not all dental issues are treatable through early orthodontic evaluation.
