If you’re considering braces for your child or your child recently had braces put on, it’s only natural that they go through an adjustment period. Here are some tips for parents on what to expect and how to help your child through their new braces experience!

The First Day

When your child’s braces are first put on, the adhesive for the brackets will need about 24 hours to set. It’s best to offer them soft foods at first and keep an eye out to check that the brackets set properly. Make sure that your child has all the tools needed such as a water pick, floss, dental wax or elastics, and schedule a follow-up appointment with Dr. Grant.

Easing Discomfort

Since braces are putting new pressure on your child’s teeth to perfect their smiles, it is normal to feel some discomfort for the first few days. However, it should be temporary and resolve within five to seven days as they adjust to their braces. You may use pain medication, like Tylenol, to help with their discomfort. If your child is experiencing extreme pain, the pain persists for longer than a week, or their wires are poking them, contact Grant Orthodontics to schedule an appointment.

What Changes Should My Child Make?

The most important changes your child make should make in their daily habits are frequent brushing and flossing. Ensuring that all food is removed from their braces will help them avoid decay and staining around the brackets. Additionally, avoiding crunchy, sticky, or otherwise hard foods is incredibly important to preserve their braces and avoid cracking their brackets. If there is damage done, it may lengthen their treatment time!
