It’s never too late to get healthy, whether you’re old or young, physically fit or completely out of shape, your journey to health and wellness starts with a single step. The personal training experts at Dynamic Health and Fitness in Charter Oak share their simple 5-step strategy to making quick progress towards achieving your fitness goals.

Personal Fitness Tip #1 – Set Your Intention On the Outcome You Are Looking For

If you practice meditation, you’ve probably experienced the power of setting an intention for the day and the same holds true for getting fit. Having a goal or something that you’re aiming towards will motivate you and help you to stay focused. It also helps you take a longer-term approach, rather than jumping straight in and overdoing things by not pacing yourself correctly.

You’re not going to get fit overnight, so don’t set unrealistic expectations. Start off moderately and progress when it feels right to do so.

If you’re not sure where to start with setting goals, here are a few goal-setting ideas to get you started:

  • Aim to exercise 3 times a week
  • Start each workout with 10 minutes of stretching and warming up
  • Plan to go for a 1-mile walk or run if you’re starting from scratch
  • Join a group class for fun and accountability
  • Try a beginner’s strength workout routine with a personal trainer from Dynamic Health and Fitness

Fitness Tip #2 – Make Small, Incremental Changes

Your daily routine holds many possibilities to add in small changes that will improve your health. Taken individually, they don’t look like much, but together they can have a big impact. Think through what you do on a normal day, and look for personal fitness opportunities:

  • Take the stairs rather than taking the elevator
  • Walk or cycle rather than driving to work
  • Do squats or focus on your posture while brushing your teeth
  • Always pack your gym bag the night before and put it in the car, so you have no excuse for skipping the gym before or after work

Small changes might not seem like a big deal, but when they're grouped together, they can have a massive impact on your personal fitness and health, especially over the longer-term.

Fitness Tip #3 – Have a Plan

As the saying goes, ‘if you fail to plan, you plan to fail’. You probably plan most of the things that are important to you, and your health and fitness goals should be no different. Writing them down in a diary, or as notes on your phone, will allow you to track and measure your progress and can include:

  • Exercise plans
  • Meal plans
  • Health and fitness goals

These plans will help to motivate you, especially if you can see improvements happening over time. It’s not easy to see improvements on a day-to-day basis, but if you track them and review your progress, you’ll be able to see how far you’ve come and that’s an important piece of the health and fitness puzzle.

Fitness Tip #4 – Consistency is Key

If you’re serious about getting fit, you’re going to need to commit to a consistent routine. If you’re not organized or you only exercise intermittently, you’re going to struggle to track your progress and see improvements.

It’s easier to be consistent if you set realistic goals, pack your gym bag in advance, prepare meals a couple of days ahead, break your goals down into daily and weekly targets. You’re more likely to be consistent if you organize your fitness goals using a calendar and make sure you have everything you need to exercise.

Fitness Tip #5 – Enjoy Your Exercise

If you’re not loving your current routine – change it! To keep going and improving, you need to be doing exercise that you enjoy. If you’re not having fun, it is much harder to keep up the momentum. Try watching fitness videos for inspiration or hit the gym with a friend or a personal trainer from Dynamic Health and Fitness.
