Dr. Patra Alatsis

For Dr. Patra Alatsis, the patient always comes first. Dr. Alatsis says there’s nothing like seeing patients beaming when they see their corrected teeth. While wearing braces takes a little getting used to, the results speak for themselves.

In modern dentistry, there are two types of braces:

  • Conventional Braces
  • Invisalign

Both types offer similar results. The primary difference is that Invisalign is less noticeable to the patient and those around them.

Conventional Braces

Conventional braces consist of metal brackets. The orthodontist adheres the metal brackets to the teeth. Wires and rubber bands are then put in place to connect the brackets. The orthodontist will adjust the wires periodically to align the teeth properly.

Pros

  • Come in plain metal or enamel-coated: If the braces are going to be visible, they might as well make a statement. Patients often choose a color that personifies them.
  • Permanently affixed: Younger children and teens might remove the braces. With this type, they’re not able to do so.
  • Best for complex issues: If there’s a great deal of alignment to be done (or other problems in the mouth), this traditional option might be better.
  • Cost: These braces are usually less expensive than Invisalign.
  • Easy to clean: Patients don’t need to perform any extra steps to clean these.

Cons

  • Noticeable: The metal is visible.
  • Can be painful: This is perfectly natural until the teeth adjust to their new position.
  • Tooth discoloration: Tooth discoloration can occur if proper dental hygiene isn’t maintained.
  • Food can get stuck: Sticky and hard foods are particularly problematic.
  • Not ideal if you play contact sports: Patients can’t remove these braces at all. Wearing a mouth guard over them is simply not practical.

Invisalign

Invisalign uses a set of aligner trays that fit over the teeth. Because the trays are clear plastic, they are significantly less noticeable. The orthodontist takes x-rays and impressions to create an accurate cast of the teeth. They’ll then configure the aligner trays for a perfect fit.

Pros

  • Barely noticeable: Unless someone comes very close, they won’t notice them.
  • Removable: Patients can take them out while they eat.
  • Food isn’t going to get caught: Remove the trays before each meal to prevent food from being trapped.
  • More comfortable: There are no wires to tighten or bands to snap.

Cons

  • More expensive: This type of braces is more costly than conventional ones.
  • Patients must remove them when eating or drinking: Unless patients are drinking water, they take the tray out of their mouth when they eat or drink.
  • Patients have to brush their teeth after every meal: If they don’t, there’s a higher risk of staining the tray.
