According to the surgeon general, 78% of Americans have their first cavity before the age of 17. A cavity is a tiny hole in a tooth’s enamel. If the hole extends through the dentine, exposing the sensitive pulp area inside the tooth, it can be surprisingly painful. Moreover, this gap allows bacteria to enter deep inside the tooth, causing even more inflammation and pain.

If the infection is left untreated, the pulp will die and start to decay. As the infection spreads, more of the living tissue dies. Unless this process is stopped in time, a root canal or extraction will be necessary. Fortunately, dental fillings can keep things from progressing to that stage.

The process is simple and relatively painless. It starts with a thorough examination and x-rays. The x-rays highlight the extent of the damage and allow the dentist to pinpoint its exact location. Next, an anesthetic is applied. Once the area is numb, the dentist drills and scrapes off the decayed tissue.

After this, a mild acidic solution is applied to the area. The acid slightly roughens the tooth surface. This helps the filling material bond better with the tooth. The dentist then applies a clear cement, followed by the filling material.

Types of Fillings

Fillings fall under one of two categories: tooth-colored fillings or metal fillings. Each type has advantages in different situations. Dr. Linda Ludin will evaluate the situation and then discuss a patient’s options with them.

Metal Fillings

Metal fillings have been in use for over a hundred years. The most common form of these fillings is the amalgam filling. The amalgam consists of copper, tin, silver, and mercury. The metal has a silver sheen. The primary advantage is that the fillings are durable and inexpensive. The disadvantage is that they’re noticeable.

Cast Gold is an alternative filling material. The material is durable but also expensive. The filled area is noticeable.

Tooth-Colored Fillings

Tooth-colored fillers are ideal for patients who prefer a more natural look. There are three options in this category:

  • Composite: A blend of glass and plastic, this material bonds to the tooth. Composites cost more than amalgams and are almost as durable. The dentist doesn’t have to drill quite as far into the tooth as with amalgams.
  • Porcelain: Porcelain looks the most like natural teeth and won’t stain. Porcelain fillings are typically the best-looking option but are more brittle than the alternatives.
  • Glass Ionomer: This is a blend of glass and acrylic powder. It’s less brittle than porcelain but not as durable as composites. This translucent filler blends with natural teeth well and protects against decay through the release of small amounts of Fluoride.
