Most people understand what a dentist does. But not many understand what an endodontist does.

An endodontist runs a more specialized practice. They focus on saving teeth. Their practices provide traumatic injury treatment rather than general dentistry.

Dr. Hatim Hamad chose this specialization after graduating from the Buffalo School of Dentistry. Since then, Dr. Hamad has undergone intensive training in the field of endodontics.

He put his skills to good use during his time in the Navy. Afterward, he returned to Buffalo. Here he helps to train a new generation of dentists at his old alma mater. He now splits his time between his practice and his teaching duties.

Advanced Endodontics of Buffalo offers the following treatments:

What is a Traumatic Injury?

In dentistry, a traumatic injury is an injury in which the teeth are at risk. Patients visit an endodontist when they’ve had teeth dislodged or knocked out. In these cases, getting the right treatment fast is crucial.

If the patient acts quickly enough, it might be possible to save the injured teeth. (By the way, it is always best to call the practice before making your way there.)

What Steps to Take in the Event of a Traumatic Injury

Should the patient have suffered a traumatic injury, there are some steps that he or she should take.

For Dislodged Teeth

A hard blow to the mouth could cause the teeth to shift from their natural position. In this instance, the patient must seek emergency medical treatment. Dr. Hamad will reposition the teeth and then stabilize them.

Patients will need a follow-up visit within seven to ten days. During this visit, Dr. Hamad evaluates the condition of the pulp inside the teeth. It’s essential to check this as the dislodgement might have been severe enough to expose the roots and the pulp.

If this happens, bacteria might work their way into the inside of the teeth. Should there be an infection, Dr. Hamad will perform non-surgical root canal therapy.

For Knocked Out Teeth

The patient must retrieve the tooth and keep it moist. If possible, the patient should try to reinsert the tooth. If not, place the tooth in a glass of milk to keep it moist. Then the patient must get to the practice as fast as possible, preferably within an hour or less.

What is Non-Surgical Root Canal Therapy?

With this form of a root canal, Dr. Hamad numbs the area thoroughly. After drilling a small hole in the crown of the tooth, he removes all of the diseased pulp and sterilizes the pulp cavity. Finally, Dr. Hamad will fill in the cavity and seal the tooth.

When Time is Of the Essence, Call the Best Traumatic Injury Team

In an emergency, patients can follow the simple steps on the website, or call (716) 271-5819 for assistance. The team will discuss emergency treatment options and give suggestions on how to limit further damage. With traumatic injuries, the earlier the patient sees the endodontist, the better.
