Knowing How to Participate in Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer can affect both men and women and can be a life-altering diagnosis for many people and their families. The HVAC industry would like to honor those fighting breast cancer, their family and friends, and commemorate those who have lost their fight to breast cancer by sharing the following information.

Wear a Pink Ribbon to Raise Awareness

pink ribbon Cancer awareness often uses the symbol of a colored ribbon to promote better understanding and knowledge about a specific cancer. For breast cancer, the international symbol is the pink ribbon, or the color pink for clothing and other awareness items.

Wearing a pink ribbon, or pink clothing, expresses moral support and solidarity of people, especially women, diagnosed with breast cancer, or functions as a memorial for those who may have passed away.

Many breast cancer organizations use the pink ribbon as part of their logo and to promote breast cancer awareness, so don’t be afraid to wear a pink ribbon this October.

October 18th is a Day of Support

The entire month of October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but October 18th is the specific day of the month meant to function as a fundraising day to raise funds and support for the study and search for a cure for breast cancer.

Wearing pink on October 18th is meant to remind people to not only support breast cancer research and create awareness of the disease but also to encourage people to donate to organizations that are focused on breast cancer research in order to hopefully one day find a cure for this disease.

How to Detect Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is a common cancer, but it is also one that has many different treatment options if caught early. Because of this, being familiar with the symptoms and signs of breast cancer can go a long way to keep you and your family and friends safe and healthy. Some of the more common signs of breast cancer are:

  • medical signsA lump, or mass in the breast tissue.
  • Breast or nipple pain.
  • Swelling on all or part of the breast, with or without a lump.
  • Skin irritation or skin dimpling.
  • Discharge from the nipple.
  • Scaly, red, or thickened skin on the breast or nipple.

It’s key to remember that other conditions can cause these symptoms as well, so it’s always important to check with your doctor if you are concerned or have any changes in your breasts.

Common breast cancer detection procedures can include mammograms, breast ultrasound, breast MRI, or breast tissue biopsy. Early detection is important and can widen the different treatment options available to anyone diagnosed with breast cancer.

Finally, the most important thing you can do to prevent breast cancer is to conduct a monthly self-exam used in combination with regular checkups with your physician.
