Spreading Breast Cancer Awareness

While October is known for its festivities and spooky fun, it’s also an important time to reflect and support one of the most impactful conditions that many people face, breast cancer. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and it’s a critical time for you not only to learn about its history but also implement some of the testing methods and volunteer opportunities. To that end, this article is meant to offer some useful information about Breast Cancer Awareness Month and also to honor the victims and families touched by this illness.

What Does the Pink Ribbon Symbolize?

pink ribbonThe pink ribbon is commonly known around the world as the symbol of breast cancer, but why? Susan G Komen for the Cure has used pink to symbolize breast cancer awareness since the mid-1980s.

The use of this color evolved over the years in the form of a ribbon given to participants of the Komen Races for the Cure. This pink ribbon is the logo of the company, but it has been so widely used that any pink ribbon (or pink attire) will do.

It commemorates breast cancer victims, families, and survivors. There are many ways to wear this beautiful color to show your support. Keep on reading to learn how you can actually make a difference.

Wear Your Pink on October 18th!

October 18th has been the day to "Wear it Pink" since 2002. The Wear it Pink Organization (wearitpink.org) has been able to use this day to raise money to support Breast Cancer Awareness by getting thousands of people to come together every year. The people that participate proudly wear their pink outfits, raise tons of money, and give it towards critical breast cancer research.

Looking for Medical Signs of Breast Cancer

medical signsIt doesn't matter if you're a man or a woman; you should know the signs of breast cancer. Besides the typical "Found a Lump," there are many other symptoms to look out for. Even if there is no lump, swelling in all or part of the breast is a common symptom, and should be checked out by a medical professional. Any irritation, itching, or redness of the breast or nipple is cause for concern as well.

The breast itself could show no signs of problems, but there may be swollen lymph nodes under the armpits, or in the neck. These signs could be harmless, but they have the potential to be deadly. Be safe, please. Anytime you feel unsure, get it looked at.
