Joining The Green Plumbing Movement

A 16-year-old from Sweden, Greta Thunberg, has made it her mission to shed light on environmental destruction. Some people refuse to believe the extent of destruction that exists or refuses to believe it is happening at all.

The fact is, Earth has piles of garbage sitting in its oceans, air pollution is destroying the ozone layer, and national forests are being chopped down. Therefore, many companies, governments, and households have been making an effort to “go green.”

Individuals hold much of the responsibility to take eco-friendly actions. This may be intimidating, but if a 16-year-old can take political action for spreading eco-friendly initiatives, anyone can. Here are three simple ways homeowners can become more eco-friendly with green plumbing techniques.

Using Eco-Friendly Materials in Water Pipes

However, the material used in water pipes does make a difference when it comes to going green, and eco-friendly materials can be very durable at the same time. PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is the most commonly used material for building water pipes.

Though it is a popular material, the thick, hard plastic is difficult and expensive to recycle and often ends up adding to overflowing landfills. Copper and iron are the next most common materials used. In some ways, these metal pipes are more eco-friendly because they are easier to recycle. However, they take more energy to create than plastic pipes making them wasteful.

Now, other plastic pipes made from polyethylene and polypropylene are starting to be introduced. These plastics are an eco-friendly option because they can be easily recycled and are more energy-efficient to create.

Install Eco-Friendly Bathroom Plumbing Gadgets

There are always new products being made for bathroom plumbing systems. Many of them are made specifically to reduce wasted water and be more eco-friendly. High-efficiency toilets, for example, use less than half the amount of water of other toilets.

Regular toilets use 3.5-7 gallons of water per flush while high-efficiency toilets only use about 1.25 gallons per flush. Low-flow showerheads are also eco-friendly because they can save gallons of water every day, without sacrificing good water pressure.

Water can be saved even without having to buy new bathroom plumbing products. Simple tasks like shutting off the water while shaving or brushing teeth can save gallons of water every day. Not to mention the amount of money that can be saved on monthly water bills too!

Check for Outdoor Plumbing Leaks

Common signs of plumbing leaks can be high water bills, musty smells, or mould spots. To determine if a leak is coming from inside or outside, turn off the main water valve and look at the meter.

If the meter stops moving, the leak is coming from inside. However, if it is moving, the leak is from the outdoor plumbing system.
