Five Steps to Choosing the Perfect Custom Shower Door Installation in Clayton

A glass shower enclosure is a far superior option to a shower curtain for several reasons. Shower enclosures don’t get moldy, dirty or discolored over time and they’re considerably more eco-friendly as they are long-lasting and are made from reinforced glass rather than PVC. And that’s without looking at the aesthetic benefits – glass shower enclosures make a bathroom seem larger and brighter. So whether you’re adding a new shower door or updating an old one, there are a couple of practical considerations to keep in mind before you can get started.

Shower Enclosures

These design details have practical implications – some of them will only work in certain situations which is why working with a glass specialist such as Oak City Glass can help you save time and money, and ensure that you have a beautiful bathroom at the end of the day.

Step 1: Choose Between a Framed of Frameless Glass Shower Enclosure

The best choice is the style that best fits your lifestyle and budget.

Frameless shower doors are more expensive as they use thicker glass, they’re fully customizable, and they're easier to clean. In some cases, they are more prone to leaking, but working with a glass specialist will ensure that the door is cut perfectly to prevent gaps which can lead to leaks. Frameless doors offer an improved aesthetic as the lack of frames contributes to a cleaner, lighter look.

Framed shower enclosures are less expensive, slightly harder to clean as the seal may collect mold and they’re less likely to leak.

Step 2: Determine Where the Showerhead Will Be Located

The position of the showerhead has an impact on the placement of the doors. The showerhead should not be placed in such a way as to point towards the doors. By setting the showerhead on the wall opposite the doors, it increases the chances of the shower leaking. Two exceptions to this are if the showerhead is low-flow or if it points directly down towards the floor.

Step 3: Decide on How and Where the Doors Will Open

There are many number of ways to open a shower door; they can swing open, slide or even roll, then you need to decide which way you’d like the door to open. These decisions have important practical and logistical implications and depend on the size of the bathroom, where the shower enclosure will be placed and how you would like the end result to look.

Step 4: Think About Whether You Want a Curb

For glass shower enclosures the shower ‘curb’ is the separation between the shower floor and the bathroom floor. Choosing not to have a curb is often the most aesthetically pleasing option, and makes the enclosure accessible to wheelchairs, but it is important to have the shower slope down, away from the doors towards the drain to prevent stagnant water and leaks.

As small ‘curb’ is therefore very useful as it prevents water from leaking onto the bathroom floor. It should slope down towards the shower drain to prevent the accumulation and pooling of water.

Step 5: Choice of Glass

This is where it gets really interesting! For glass shower doors, there are two main types of glass that should be considered: ultra-clear low-iron glass or standard clear glass. Both meet high safety standards but, on close inspection, clear glass has a slightly green hue due to the presence of iron. Ultra-clear glass is therefore optimal as the iron has been removed resulting in crystal-clear glass.
