What Causes Low Water Pressure in the Shower?

Few things in life offer the consistent relief and relaxation that can be felt when stepping into a hot shower at the end of a long and tiring day. It’s not just imagination, either. Studies have shown that hot showers lower blood sugar levels and blood pressure, reduce stress, inflammation, and muscle pains, improve circulation and sleep quality, and relieve sinus congestion.

Even cold showers are beneficial as they stimulate the immune system, increase alertness, and speed up metabolism. It’s a win-win situation - except, that is, when the water coming out of the shower head slows down, and the lack of pressure reduces whatever enjoyment can be had. So, what exactly causes low water pressure in the shower? Here are a few of the most common reasons and what homeowners can do about it.

Problems With the Water Heater

water heaterOne of the possible causes for low water pressure is an issue with the water heater, especially if the low water pressure in the house happens only when hot water is being used. Low hot water pressure could be a sign of something wrong with the water heater or hot water lines, such as a leak, an accumulation of sediment, or an issue with the pressure valves.

In any case, homeowners should have their water heaters checked by a reliable plumber to determine the problem and fix it if the drop in water pressure occurs with only hot water. A sediment buildup could require flushing the water heater, an issue with the valves could be resolved by opening or replacing them, and leaks may require repair or an outright replacement.

A Leak or Clog

Leaks and clogs can also cause low water pressure and are more likely the case if the water pressure issues occur with multiple plumbing fixtures and with both cold and hot water. Pipes that supply water may clog and narrow with mineral or sediment deposits. When the internal diameter of a pipe becomes narrow, the volume of water flowing through it drops, resulting in low water pressure from connected fixtures in the house.

Leaks have a similar effect. Because a leak in the plumbing system allows water to escape, pressure drops as a consequence. Calling a plumber to find and fix clogs and leaks is, therefore, of utmost importance to restore water pressure in the shower and other affected plumbing fixtures.

Blocked Showerhead

In some instances, the problem can be the showerhead itself, which may be the case if poor water pressure occurs with hot and cold water from only that showerhead and no other fixtures.

Mineral and scale buildup can narrow or block the openings on the nozzle, causing a noticeable reduction in water pressure from that one fixture. Fortunately, this scenario is pretty easy to fix. All one needs to do is remove the scale buildup blocking the showerhead openings by either replacing it or soaking it in a water and white vinegar solution to soften the gunk and then gently brushing off the residue.
