A Look Inside the Fully Stocked Trucks of Heating and Cooling Contractors

Any homeowner who’s ever attempted to perform any kind of work on their HVAC system has probably learned quickly that it’s a much more daunting task than it seems. Not only are heaters and air conditioners incredibly complex machines, but many of the tools required to work on them aren’t likely to be found in the average homeowner’s garage.

After all, there’s a reason heating and cooling technicians tend to roll up in trucks or vans packed with gear – they want to be ready for anything the job throws at them. This article will explore some of the tools and equipment used by heating and cooling professionals.

Standard Hand Tools

toolsSome of the hand tools HVAC technicians use are common - hammers, screwdrivers, pliers, drills, and various wrenches such as crescent, pipe, and adjustable wrenches. Heating and cooling contractors use many of these essential hand tools when they need to access parts of the unit that require dismantling or assembling, such as when replacing fan motors or other components. They also use these tools to install and adjust thermostats, fasten ductwork, and make necessary modifications or repairs.

But some other hand tools they use aren’t quite as common - but are no less essential. These include tube and metal cutters, staple guns, and gauges. Heating and cooling contractors often use gauges to measure pressure and can be used to diagnose problems with a system, such as leaks.

Safety Equipment

Working on HVAC systems can be dangerous, so heating and cooling contractors utilize different safety equipment to protect themselves. Flexible heavy-duty gloves help protect against burns, nicks, and scratches while allowing technicians the dexterity needed to handle small parts and delicate components. Goggles and safety glasses protect against debris, chemicals, and sparks. Earplugs are used when operating loud power tools, particularly in confined spaces.

HVAC professionals have long used face masks as protection against airborne contaminants such as dust and chemical exposure. Sturdy boots are also essential safety equipment for technicians to protect their feet from falling heavy or sharp objects, provide traction, and prevent slipping.

Special Tools of the Trade

toolsFinally, every HVAC technician will have a variety of specialized tools designed specifically for working on heating and cooling systems. This includes coil fin straighteners (for repairing and adjusting the metal fins that assist with heat exchange on evaporator/condenser coils), a psychrometer (used for measuring relative humidity and airflow), an HVAC vacuum pump (for clearing refrigerant lines of moisture and gas), refrigerant tanks, and leak detectors (for pinpointing refrigerant or gas leaks).

On top of these specialized HVAC tools, technicians will bring specific replacement parts or components they may need. By driving around in fully stocked trucks, HVAC contractors know they will have everything they need for their job to get customers back to their routines as quickly and efficiently as possible!
