3 Easy Ways To Go Green and Save Money In Honor of St. Paddy’s Day!

Everyone likes to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in their own way, be it a raucous night on the town, a nice dinner of corned beef and cabbage, or just a splash of green added to the day’s outfit (if only to avoid the dreaded pinching!). But in recent years, more and more people are using the holiday to bring awareness to a different kind of “green” spirit.

By looking for ways to reduce their environmental impact, homeowners are helping to keep the earth as green as the rolling hills of Ireland - not to mention saving some green on their utility bills! So to help homeowners “go green” this St. Paddy’s Day, here are three easy tips for a more eco-friendly home!

Replace Old Appliances & Fixtures With Eco-Friendly Models

showerIn many homes - especially older ones - a great deal of water waste and excess energy consumption may occur under the homeowners’ noses. Older plumbing fixtures and appliances tend to use much more water and energy than the latest models, so upgrading even a few of these fixtures can greatly impact utility bills.

Toilets are generally the single biggest source of water usage in the average home. Very old models can use up to 6 gallons per flush (yikes!), but new water-saving toilets only use 1.28 gallons - a significant improvement on even today’s standard models, which use 1.6 gallons. Old showerheads and sink faucets can also waste their fair share of water - but most newer water-saving models are designed to use anywhere from 10% to 20% less water without sacrificing water pressure.

Upgrading large appliances like water heaters, laundry machines, and dishwashers can have an even bigger impact since these are major consumers of both water and energy. Newer, more efficient models will help conserve water and reduce the home’s reliance on power plants and natural gas. When shopping for plumbing fixtures and appliances, homeowners can look for those that meet the WaterSense and EnergyStar efficiency standards.

Develop the Habit of Water Conservation

Updating the home’s plumbing fixtures is a powerful way to reduce water waste, but how those fixtures are used also makes a difference. There are numerous ways homeowners can cut down on water waste in their everyday activities.

Homeowners can turn off faucets when brushing their teeth, scrubbing dishes, and washing their hands. They can save several gallons a day by turning off the shower water while lathering up and applying shampoo. They can water the yard in the early morning to minimize the water lost to evaporation. They can schedule regular plumbing inspections to find and fix any leaks in the plumbing system - the average home can lose around 10,000 gallons of water every year due to unseen or unaddressed leaks!

These habits may be difficult to stick to at first, but getting used to them is easy. After a while, everyone in the household will be looking for new opportunities to conserve water - they can even make a fun game of it!

Watch What Goes Down the Toilet

toilet Practicing water conservation is a key part of going green. Still, homeowners can also help protect the world’s water supply by avoiding water pollution - and there’s no better place to start than the toilet! It’s estimated that trash flushed down toilets makes up about 7% of the volume of plastics and litter in the world’s oceans. That’s over 10 million metric tons of garbage!

Some items that commonly get flushed and pollute the ocean include paper towels, tissues, baby wipes, feminine hygiene products, contraceptive devices, dental floss, cotton balls, Q-tips, bandages, and even cigarette butts. Many people also flush pharmaceuticals and other pills, and although these will dissolve, they can contaminate the local groundwater and poison wildlife.

So what items can be flushed? Only toilet paper and human waste (animal feces can also be acceptable, provided that it isn’t mixed with litter or other trash) should ever be flushed down the toilet. Wastewater treatment plants can process these materials and prevent them from harming the environment, unlike the other items listed above. And of course, this has the added benefit of preventing clogs, so homeowners can save money on plumbing repairs while they help the environment!
