3 Good Heating and Cooling Habits to Adopt This Year

New Year’s is often associated with making resolutions to make the coming year the best. A resolution can range from setting goals like reading more books to getting back in shape after the holidays. One hallmark of every resolution is that they support habits that bring about positive results. Looking around the home, homeowners can see plenty of opportunities for goals based around the house.

One place that every homeowner should focus on in 2023 is keeping the home more comfortable by allowing the HVAC system to do its job effectively. Too often, homeowners adopt bad habits that actually impede the heating and cooling system, which can cause a spike in energy bills, issues with the unit, and even discomfort. Here are good habits to aim for regarding the heating and cooling system in the coming year.

Replace the Air Filters Regularly filter

Air filters protect heating and cooling units, and homeowners should change every filter at least every three months. Air filters clean up the air in the home by collecting debris in the air, but they also protect heating and cooling equipment from accumulating large amounts of dust and grime, which could lead to problems. Failing to change the air filters as often as necessary can also lead to higher energy bills and poor indoor air quality.

If filters are changed regularly, but there are still high levels of dust and debris in the air and energy bills are high, they may need to be changed more often. This can be due to factors like:

  • High dust environment around the home
  • Presence of pets in the house
  • Not enough air turnover during the summer and winter

Keep Air Vents Open and Unblocked

ventsHeating and cooling systems are designed to heat and cool the home evenly. Every air duct in every room is skillfully sized to ensure adequate air circulation regardless of the season. Unfortunately, one of the bad habits that homeowners can fall into is blocking or restricting air vents.

Air vents can be restricted by purposely closing them off or accidentally obstructing them with furniture or rugs. If certain rooms feel hotter or colder depending on the season, then it is likely that air vents in that room or nearby rooms are obstructed. Take a moment and find all the air vents in the home and ensure they are clean, clear, and unobstructed to keep the home evenly warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

When air vents are blocked or closed, it can also create a pressure imbalance in the system because one area of the HVAC system is receiving less air than another. The result is an imbalance between the supply and return air, leading to reduced efficiency in the overall system. Additionally, this pressure imbalance can cause damage to the HVAC system, such as strain on fans and blower motors, short cycling of the system, or a complete system breakdown. Therefore, it is important to ensure that all air vents are open and unobstructed to maintain a balanced pressure and ensure the system is running optimally.

Schedule Professional HVAC Maintenance Twice Per Year

Neglecting AC and heater maintenance is one of the worst habits homeowners can have. Heating and AC equipment both need attention once per year to keep running efficiently. Routine maintenance can offer benefits like:

  • Increased longevity
  • Fewer repairs
  • Better efficiency
  • Lower utility bills
  • Better comfort in the home
  • Cleaner air
