What Is Humidity?

Humidity refers to how much moisture is in the air. A good amount of humidity is good. It keeps people’s skin from drying out, and it keeps plants happy and healthy. Yet, too much humidity can make going outside unbearable. And once it gets inside the home? Even sitting in the living room can feel like sitting in an oven.

Many homeowners get dehumidifiers to regulate their home’s indoor air quality. This cuts down on humidity inside the house–which is also key to maintaining the house itself.

What Does a Dehumidifier Do? humidifier

A dehumidifier reduces the amount of humidity in the air. Dehumidifiers come in all shapes and sizes. Some fit on kitchen countertops. Others are much larger, weighing about 10 pounds. They usually run on electricity.

One plug in a dehumidifier, and the machine draws moisture from the air. Periodically, homeowners will have to remove the excess water from the reservoir at the bottom of the device. How often they must do this depends on various factors, including how much humidity is in the air.

One can set their dehumidifier to certain levels, depending on how dry they want their home’s air to be. Ideally, one should have their dehumidifier set to 35 percent. This reduces mold growth and keeps residents’ skin from dying out.

Signs That One Should Get a Dehumidifier humidifier

Homeowners should consider getting dehumidifiers if:
  • There’s condensation on the windows. This means that there’s too much moisture in the air, accumulating on the windows. Condensation may also appear on the “windows” of ovens, microwaves, and other in-home appliances.
  • Blankets, sheets, and clothing feel damp. Cloth can absorb the moisture in the air, making it feel as though it wasn’t in the dryer long enough.
  • There’s mold or mildew growth. Mold and mildew thrive in environments with high humidity levels. Over time, these growths can cause respiratory problems, damage drywall, and lower the home’s resale value.
  • The home has a stale or musty smell. This could point to mold or mildew growth, which has an earthy, unpleasant smell.

In Ohio, it tends to get humid in December. Homeowners who feel a noticeable change in their home’s indoor air quality should consider getting a dehumidifier while demand (and prices) are low.

The Benefits of Having a Dehumidifier

There are many benefits of having an in-home dehumidifier, such as:

  • It limits mold growth. If there’s little humidity in the area, mold likely won’t grow.
  • It makes the home more comfortable. One may see that the thermostat is set to 75 and still sweat while sitting on the couch. By getting a dehumidifier, they can regulate the home’s temperature and improve their comfort.
  • It reduces moisture-build-up on surfaces and clothes. No one should suffer from wearing damp clothes because of in-home humidity. A dehumidifier would prevent this from happening, making every garment feel like it just came fresh out of the dryer.

Purchasing and setting up a dehumidifier is just one way to maintain ideal indoor humidity. Some other considerations include getting box fans, opening certain windows, and keeping the air conditioning on.
