What is a Trenchless Pipe Repair?

A trenchless sewer line repair is exactly what it sounds like: a sewer line repair or replacement that does not deal with the invasive trenching process of standard sewer liner repairs. Although it has been around since the 40s, with slip-lining being one of the oldest techniques, it has become a more common process nowadays with more techniques involved, such as pipe bursting and cured-in-place pipe repair or CIPP.

How is a Trenchless Pipe Repair Done?

There are three main methods of trenchless pipe repair: pipe bursting, slip lining, and cured-in-place pipe (CIPP).

The pipe bursting method is used when the piping system is damaged beyond repair. Like all trenchless pipe repair and trenchless pipe replacement methods, pipe bursting is done without needing to dig up the landscaping, providing a cleaner and quicker resolution. The pipe bursting process requires an expander head, pulling rods, a pulling machine, a retaining device, and a hydraulic power pack. The expander head is inserted into the ground through a small dug-out access point where it works, with the assistance of other mentioned tools, to burst or destroy the old and damaged pipes while simultaneously replacing them with new ones.

On the other hand, slip lining and CIPP are used to repair or restore damaged pipes instead of replacing them. The slip lining process is when a polyurethane or polyvinyl liner is inserted into the pipes through a small access point. These liners are grouted and sealed into place for durability.

The CIPP method requires inserting a felt lining into the preexisting pipe and filling it with resin that fills any cracks or dents. The resin is then cured before the felt lining is removed several hours after the curing process is complete.

If there is a suspected problem with the sewer line, a professional plumber should be consulted to determine which trenchless method would work best. They can examine the pipes with a small camera and decide whether or not they can be repaired or need to be replaced.

What Are the Benefits of Trenchless Repairs?save time and money

Trenchless repair methods, whether pipe bursting, slip lining, or CIPP, offer many benefits over the traditional trench process. Trenchless repair allows professionals to skip the invasive excavating process in which landscaping, including the yard and often the driveway, is dug up. This process can be tedious, time-consuming, and expensive for both professionals and homeowners.

Thus, using the trenchless repair methods and avoiding the invasive trench process can help save time, energy, and money on both sides. With no intense destruction to the property, homeowners can relax knowing that they won’t have to be concerned with any leftover mess or additional costs that come with repairing the landscaping. Trenchless repair is the preferred method – especially since it’s less invasive than its counterpart and allows professionals to work much more quickly and efficiently.
