Understanding the Signs of a Faulty Water Heater

The hero of plumbing appliances is the water heater. Not only is it responsible for the hot water used for cleaning clothes and dishes, but there is also nothing better than washing off the day in a hot shower. However, at some point, the water heater will fail and leave people stuck in the cold.

Some of the more obvious and easily recognized signs of a failing water heater are:

  • Age: Most water heaters last around ten years. Units that are nearing this age will likely start to have issues.
  • Frequent Repairs: Water heaters that need frequent repairs are failing. At a certain point, it makes more sense to schedule a water heater replacement instead of another repair.
  • Inadequate Hot Water Supply: This one is probably the most easily noticeable. A repair is necessary if a water heater’s performance has dropped off.

On the other hand, not every sign of failure a water heater gives is quite as obvious. Keep reading for three more common signs of water heater failure. Homeowners should call professionals immediately if signs indicate a water heater is failing.

Weird Sounds

soundsA water heater should operate with minimal noise. Apart from a dull rushing sound from a gas burner, a water heater is silent. If a deep rumbling sound occurs, there is a sediment problem. It is likely a sign that water heater maintenance has been neglected.

In a water heater, minerals and sediment suspended in the water can build up on the bottom of the tank. The build-up in the bottom of the tank causes the water heater to lose efficiency and make loud noises. Water heater maintenance, specifically flushing the tank, is important to keep efficiency and prevent sediment from damaging the tank. Without maintenance, the sediment will corrode the tank and require premature replacement of the water heater. Aim to schedule water heater maintenance once or twice yearly.

Discolored or Stinky Water

water The inside of a water heater is protected by an anode rod. An anode rod is necessary to prevent corrosion of the tank from the minerals inside. Over time, the anode will sacrifice itself and allow itself to corrode instead of the tank. Once the anode rod is destroyed, it must be replaced or the tank can succumb to corrosion.

When corrosion is present in a water heater, weird things can happen with the water. It may look discolored or even have an unusual odor to it. Maintenance can keep track of the state of the anode rod and flush out any contaminants that may end up in drinking water. However, the water heater tank will need to be replaced if the corrosion is bad.

Water Heater Leaks

Leaks in the water tank are giveaways that the water heater likely needs to be replaced. After the anode rod is gone, corrosion and rust will cause the tank to leak slowly at first and then more rapidly. Tank leaks can go unnoticed for a while since the water that leaks out is caught by drain pans.

However, finding leaks early is crucial for keeping things safe. Water heaters are pressure vessels that can explode given the right circumstances. Homeowners should check in on the water heater every month or so and schedule water heater maintenance every year.
