How a Faulty Water Heater Will Affect Your Home

Faulty water heaters will have noticeable adverse effects on the home, and there are many reasons for their failure. If the water heater is over ten years old or water heater maintenance has been neglected, it will begin to have problems and break down.

Homeowners should also note issues like if the water heater needs frequent repairs, if it quickly runs out of hot water, and if the temperature is inconsistent. These are all obvious signs of a faulty water heater, but there are more signs homeowners can look out for.

Loud Sounds Coming From the Water Heater

soundsLoud sounds are one of the most identifiable signs of problems with the water heater. Sediment build-up reacts with the water heater’s element causing explosive or popping noises which can be prevented by draining the water heater once or twice yearly. A professional should be called if these sounds continue after draining and refilling the tank.

Many homeowners have experienced a strange ticking sound from their water heater. There are several possible explanations for these noises. It’s likely due to the expansion and contraction of the metal tank as it heats and cools. This is a perfectly normal process and is nothing to worry about. Another possibility is that sediment has built up, causing the water heater to overheat. This can happen if the water is particularly hard or the heater hasn’t been flushed in a while. If this is the case, homeowners should consider having a professional flush the tank before the tank corrodes and needs to be replaced.

Is Your Water Discolored or Foul Smelling?

water In most cases, discolored and foul-smelling water is caused by bacteria that have built up in the tank or corrosion. While the bacterium is harmless, it can cause unpleasant odors. Additionally, the bacterium may cause the water to become discolored. If this occurs, there are a few things that can be done. First, have the tank professionally cleaned. A water filter can also be installed in the home’s main water line. This will help remove bacteria and other impurities from the water before they can enter the house.

Corrosion in the water heater tank is caused by neglected maintenance, including not flushing the tank and replacing the anode rod. The anode rod protects the tank from corrosive materials, but it can't prevent corrosion anymore when it gets too worn out. The anode rod should be checked during tank flushings and replaced when needed. When corrosion in the water heater is too severe, it requires a replacement.

Check Your Water Heater For Leaks

If the water heater leaks, it’s important to understand what is causing the issue. A water heater will likely leak because the tank has developed a crack or hole due to age, wear and tear, or an earthquake or other natural disaster.

Another possible cause of a leak is a loose fitting. This can occur if the connections between the tank and the pipes are not tight enough. These are usually quick fixes if caught before additional damage can occur. That is why it’s crucial to take action immediately if the water heater leaks because the longer repairs are put off, the more damage can occur. In some cases, like if the water heater is leaking from cracks or corrosion, it’s best to invest in a water heater replacement than attempt to repair it.
