Understanding Trenchless Pipe Repairs

One of the most expensive and disruptive plumbing issues homeowners face is when a sewer pipe needs repair. Traditional pipe lining and repair jobs require a huge investment in time, manpower, equipment, and money. They also often cause significant and unsightly damage to the lawn and property.

But what if there is a better way?

Trenchless pipe repair is a relatively new method of repairing a sewer line that has collapsed or suffered damage. Unlike traditional pipe repair, one can fix sewer issues without the need for:

  • Heavy equipment
  • Huge teams of workers
  • Excessive man-hours
  • Damage to the lawn or property
  • Digging
  • New pipes

Inside the Trenchless Sewer Line Repair Method

pipeTrenchless repair means the damaged sewer pipe is fixed in place. The least-invasive process has several steps:
  • Camera inspection – To check for any blockages, leaks, cracks, or root intrusion. If there are any of these issues, technicians clear the pipe.
  • Preparation – An epoxy resin that will serve as the replacement “pipe” is poured into a felt slip lining, followed by an inflatable bladder.
  • Placement – The slip lining is fed into the sewer pipe through the property’s primary plumbing access point until it covers any cracks or failed sections.
  • Inflation – The bladder is then filled with air, and as it expands, it takes the shape of the existing pipe.
  • Curing – The resin hardens over the next several hours until a new Cured-in-Place Pipe (CIPP) is formed, repairing/replacing the damaged pipe.
  • Inspection – A final camera inspection is conducted to ensure that the liner has properly formed and adhered to the sewer pipe.

Another method, called “pipe bursting”, involves using a rotating “bursting head” to break up the old damaged sewer pipe. As the rotating head moves forward, it drags behind a flexible replacement.

This allows the new undamaged pipe to be laid down in the same location as the old pipe without needing further excavation. The only digging that needs to be done is for an entry and exit point.

These trenchless sewer line replacement methods are much faster, more cost-effective, and less destructive than the old method of digging up the old pipe and replacing it.

What Problems Can Trenchless Methods Fix?

Trenchless pipe repair is primarily used to fix the main sewer line from the house to the public sewer line. It is a good option when the residential line is:

  • Cracked
  • Broken
  • Collapsed
  • Burst
  • Leaking
  • Rusted through
  • Penetrated by roots

Remember that trenchless sewer repair is not a solution in every situation. For example, if one installed the sewer pipes improperly, neither pipe bursting nor CIPP will correct that problem.

Why Should Homeowners Opt for It?save

There are several benefits to trenchless pipe repair:
  • Quality – In many ways, a trenchless repair results in a superior pipe that is not liable to corrode, rust, crack, or be damaged by roots.
  • Speed – Because there is no need for heavy equipment or time-consuming excavation or pipe replacement, the trenchless repair is much faster. In most cases, one can do the work in less than a day.
  • Non-invasive – With trenchless sewer repair, there is no need to tear up the yard, driveway, foundation, or street to fix the sewer line.
  • Price – Less manpower and labor, less equipment, and fewer supplies mean that trenchless pipe repair is up to 75% less expensive than full pipe replacement.
  • Versatility – Pipe bursting and CIPP repair work with any existing pipe – clay, concrete, iron, and all other materials.
  • Longevity – Epoxy resin-lined pipes are extremely durable and can last 50 years.
  • Best green practices – Sewer lines are made of eco-friendly materials.
