3 Easy Ways To Reduce Plumbing Issues

Plumbing disasters are the last thing any homeowner wants to deal with this summer. Many homeowners believe it won’t happen to them, but it can! It happens all the time! Homeowners must take care of their plumbing systems to reduce plumbing issues and costs. It is a win-win.

Continue reading to learn about tips and tricks from professionals to help prevent plumbing disasters from happening this summer.

Is There a Pipe Leak?

leakHomeowners should check for plumbing leaks by looking at their faucets, drains, and other visible plumbing. If these fixtures seem to have leaks around them or underneath the sink, there is a good chance there is a pipe leak somewhere else in the home. Homeowners can also check the water bill. If the water usage is unusually high, there also may be a leak.

The only way to know for sure if a pipe leak in the house isn’t visible is to have a professional come out and inspect. An inspection will include checking the pipes for leaks and fixing them if they are repairable.

All pipe leaks should be fixed as soon as they are found to prevent additional damage to the home and plumbing. One of the worst things for a home is water damage. This plumbing disaster could flood a home quickly or gradually deteriorate the house from inside the walls and even underneath the foundation. Water damage is nothing to mess around with, so look for leaks.

Things To Never Put Down the Drain

drainSummer and BBQs go hand in hand, but be careful with the grease left over. One of the worst things families can do to their plumbing systems is put grease and other cooking oils down the drain. Many think it’s ok to pour grease down the drain if they let the hot water run for a long time. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth. In reality, the hot water isn’t nearly as hot as the grease, so it cools the grease down faster.

When grease gets poured down the drain, it cools and sticks to the inside of the pipes, trapping any food debris that goes down the drain. This forms massive clogs that can be hard to eliminate without professional help. Instead, it’s best to pour the grease into a container, let it solidify, and throw it away.

Flush Drains: It’s a Must

The entire plumbing system is connected, so when one part suffers, the whole home suffers. It can even lead to entire neighborhoods suffering from plumbing problems. That is why it's important to have pipes and drains flushed regularly.

Homeowners can have this professionally done once or twice a year, but they can also do it independently as a preventative method for clogs. Chemical drain cleaners should always be avoided because they can do more harm than good to the piping system.

Here is how homeowners can flush their drains effectively:

  • Pour one part of baking soda down the drain
  • Pour one detail of vinegar down the drain
  • Wait around 15 minutes for them to react and fizz
  • Rinse drain and pipe with warm water

That’s it! The vinegar and baking soda cause a chemical reaction that effectively breaks up build-up in the piping system without causing other issues.
