Consider Installing These “Green” Fixtures This Earth Day

Getting eco-friendly appliances has never been easier. Not only are these appliances more affordable than ever, but they’re saving homeowners money and have numerous environmental benefits. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends installing “EnergyStar” and “WaterSense” appliances. These devices conserve both water and electricity well within the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards.

There is no need to stress about higher-than-normal energy bills and old appliances that don’t get the job done anymore. This Earth Day, people should consider the merits of “going green” and trading out some of their older appliances for more cost-effective ones.

Water-Saving Appliances Save Water and Money

The EPA notes that a large percentage of a home’s water consumption goes down the toilet. Literally. Toilets make up about 25 percent of a home’s water use. Showers come in a close second, followed by running faucets.

With this information in mind, homeowners should consider:

  • Installing eco-friendly toilets: Nowadays, many homeowners have switched their older high-flow toilets to low-flow models. These appliances use less water than high-flow toilets yet still get the job done. Many states (including Virginia) offer tax incentives and rebates for homeowners that trade their traditional toilets for low-flow ones. Homeowners can check their eligibility by visiting the EPA’s website
  • Getting WaterSense showerheads: The EPA notes that most standard showerheads use 2.5 gallons a minute while WaterSense showerheads use two gallons of water. This doesn’t seem like much difference, but it adds up.
  • Installing new faucets: WaterSense-approved faucets use 1.5 gallons of water a minute without sacrificing water pressure, while most bathroom faucets use 2.2 gallons a minute.

These are just a few examples of eco-friendly plumbing that help homeowners spend less on their water bills while also helping water conservation efforts.

Energy-Efficiency Appliances Are All the Rage water heater

The U.S. Department of Energy notes that most of the home’s energy use goes toward powering the air conditioning and heating system. They recommend installing EnergyStar appliances, which can reduce a home’s energy consumption by up to 30 percent.

Examples of EnergyStar appliances include:

  • Water heaters
  • Air conditioners
  • Heat pumps
  • Furnaces
  • Ventilation fans
  • Thermostats
  • Boilers

Many states offer tax incentives (and rebates) for homeowners who trade in their traditional appliances for eco-friendly ones. This financial incentive, and the energy bill savings resulting from these appliances, can help with both the cost of installation and maintenance.

Don’t Forget Eco-Friendly Pipes!

By themselves, pipes don’t make the water hotter or colder. However, combined with an eco-friendly water heater, homeowners can maximize their home’s energy efficiency by insulating their pipes. This involves wrapping material around the pipes, preventing heat from escaping. Insulating pipes is also a great way to avoid frozen pipes during the colder months.

Homeowners can also save energy by investing in metal pipes. Copper pipes are a cheap option and are good conductors of heat, meaning that hot water will stay hot. This is one of its advantages over PVC or plastic piping.
