Keep your deck furniture looking like the bee’s knees, or not!

Kansas City, United States - April 14, 2022 / All Weather Decks /

There are so many things to look forward to when spring arrives, but pollen isn’t one of them.

In addition to triggering allergies, pollen collects on deck furniture in the form of a yellow dust. While unsightly, the worst part is that it prevents you from thoroughly enjoying your outdoor living space. Once there’s a layer of pollen on your deck seating, you can’t relax without getting it all over your clothes.

The problem with pollen is that it’s designed to stick to things. This works great if you’re a honeybee, but your deck furniture isn’t rolling around the yard pollinating plants. To be successful at removing this powdery residue from your patio furniture, you need to use specific cleaning methods as well as take preventative measures that allow you to clean less often.

Keep your deck furniture looking like the bee’s knees, or not!

When you want to hang out on your Kansas City deck, pollen can be a real buzz kill. Use the following strategies to clean this yellow dust off your deck furniture and keep it pollen-free.

Freshen Fabric Cushions

To properly clean pollen off your deck furniture cushions, you first need to dust them off. This can be accomplished with a hand duster, portable vacuum, or even a leaf blower set on its lowest speed.

Prior to dusting, you should spread out an old sheet in the yard as far from the deck as possible. Once this is done, set the furniture cushions on top of the sheet and proceed to dust off all sides of the cushions. By doing this over the sheet, you aren’t transferring the pollen to your deck’s surface and you’re also keeping the fabric cushions from touching the dirty ground.

Now that you’ve removed the loose surface pollen, it’s time to wash off the stuck on yellow residue. You can make your own warm mild soapy water solution in a bucket using a ¼ cup of Dawn dishwashing liquid or Woolite. Then, use a soft sponge to wipe down the cushions. Be sure to rinse the sponge often.

Next, spray the cushions with a garden hose and set them in the shade to dry on a sheet other than the one you used for the cleaning process.

If your deck furniture cushions are especially soiled with pollen, Sunbrella recommends using 303 Multi Surface Cleaner Spray because it’s safe to use on synthetic, natural, and delicate fabric, plastic, vinyl, metal, painted surfaces, canvas, teak, and outdoor upholstery.

Make Deck Furniture Frames Sparkle

Cleaning pollen off patio furniture frames is a breeze compared to the cushions, but you still need to follow protocol according to the design and material of the frames.

Wicker furniture can be wiped down with a wet sponge. However, a pressurized stream of water is necessary to remove pollen from all the crevices.

If your deck furniture is made of iron, mix a few drops of Dawn liquid dish detergent in warm water, then dip your sponge in and wipe the pollen from the frame. Once this is done, rinse the furniture using a hose.

Teak furniture is the easiest to clean due to the wood’s natural oils. Simply dust off the pollen using a soft cloth or an old t-shirt. If the pollen has become ground-in, it’s safe to use a brush and mild dish soap. Just remember to rinse off any leftover soap residue with a hose.

If your Kansas City deck furniture is made of metal or plastic with attached fabric seating, it’s safe to use a power washer on the lowest setting to get the chairs pollen-free.

Restore Tabletop Transparency

If your outdoor dining and end tables have glass tops coated with pollen, it’s super easy getting them clean and clear. Just make your own cleaning solution by mixing ¼ cup of white vinegar with two cups of warm water. Then, use a sponge to wipe away the yellow residue. Be sure to rinse the sponge often or you’ll leave streaks all over the glass.

Protect Deck Furniture from Accumulating Pollen

When springtime finally arrives, pollen can catch us off guard. Oftentimes, we’re still wearing sweaters when the trees and plants begin releasing pollen into the air.

To prevent your deck furniture from getting coated with yellow dust, cover your chairs and use fitted tablecloths. Doing this after all threats of snow have passed will save you a lot of time and energy because you aren’t giving pollen the chance to settle on your Kansas City deck furniture.

It’s a good idea to get into the habit of covering your patio furniture year-round to protect it from all of nature’s elements. This way, you aren’t cleaning your deck furniture as often and it’s always ready for you and your guests to enjoy.
