Three Ways To Save Green This St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick's Day get-togethers are a common practice. Whether it has friends over for a movie or a family party, extra guests in the home will create more water usage. Here are a few simple ways to cut down on water expenses if a homeowner or tenant prepares before big occasions.

Don't Leave The Tap Runningtap

Most people are not going to simply leave the tap on when they're not in the kitchen or bathroom. However, even if the tap is turned off after finishing, a significant amount of water is used.

Before St. Patrick's Day, practicing water conservation habits can make a difference. Since ordinary people brush their teeth for two minutes twice a day, extra water waste can seem insignificant. Turning off the faucet while brushing can and does save money over time. This is one of the most frequently recommended methods used to save water because it requires very little effort.

Contrary to popular assumption, washing hands in a bathroom sink does not require a steady stream of water. Applying soap before turning on the sink and only using the initial burst will provide enough water for scrubbing. A short rinse after is usually sufficient to remove excess soap.

showerBaths vs. Showers: Which One Saves More Money?

The debate about these efficient water conservation methods has been going on for decades. Using a shower allows unnecessary water to drain. Even though a shower is typically used for a shorter time, the shower spray can raise bills.

On the other hand, Baths require much more water all at once. This may also need to be completely drained and then refilled for cleaning purposes. Depending on the width and height of an individual, the efficacy of this method may not work.

Since both cleaning practices wastewater, adjusting how to bathe may make more sense. One can replace showerheads and faucets with "green" shower plumbing alternatives. Low flow shower faucets and showerheads do not impact the strength of the water pressure, but they do help eliminate excess water usage. These can range in price from $100 to $1000 depending on the type of faucet and personal preference.

How Does Flushing Impact Water Usage?

A clogged toilet can waste a significant amount of water. Clogs typically come from non-biodegradable substances like feminine products, paper towels, or food wrappers. Natural clogs can also happen but may cause smaller and softer blockages.

Regardless of the type of clog, many people's first option is to flush. A bathroom plumbing problem can be embarrassing, and by flushing, the clog may be able to disintegrate on its own. This does not usually happen.

Sometimes the water pressure can dislodge a blockage, and no other treatment is needed. Other times it takes several flushes to unclog. Sometimes no amount of flushing will disintegrate the blockage, but a homeowner might not know this until they have flushed multiple times.

This all leads to unnecessary water drainage. Instead of flushing a blockage, using a different method may be more efficient. This can include using a drain snake or an environmentally-friendly cleaning solution.
