3 Ways to Save Money This St. Patrick's Day

With rising energy costs globally, everyone is searching for ways to save some green this St. Patrick's Day! Simple tips can drastically decrease water usage in American households and reduce water bills no matter the living situation. Spend money on things that matter most rather than wasting money on utility bills!

#1: Turn Off the Taptap

The Environmental Protection Agency did a study that found that leaving water running when brushing teeth wastes, on average, 4 gallons of water each time teeth are brushed. A four-person household where everyone brushes their teeth twice a day will waste 32 gallons of water!

One option to reduce water usage when brushing is to keep a cup on hand for rinsing the mouth after brushing. Fill up the cup when wetting the toothbrush, and then turn off the water until ready to rinse the toothbrush to put it away for next time.

#2: Baths vs. Showers

The debate about which costs more continues! The first step is to determine how much water is used in each case based on the individual's habits. How long is the standard shower and what is the water flow rate of the showerhead? Low-flow showerheads use less water than unrestricted shower plumbing.

The average bath uses between 20 to 50 gallons of water, and low-flow showerheads use 2.5 gallons of water per minute, while unrestricted showerheads use about 5 gallons of water per minute. Baths might be cheaper if taking showers for more than 4 minutes and use an unrestricted showerhead. One key point to consider is changing the showerhead or reducing the time in the shower. Or both.

#3: Avoid Flushing These

What shouldn't be flushed down the toilet?

  • Wipes (even flushable ones!)
  • Cotton pads or Q-tips
  • Feminine hygiene items (pads and tampons)
  • Diapers
  • Condoms
  • Floss
  • Hair
  • Paper towels
  • Cigarettes
  • Meds
  • Chewing gum or candy
  • Cat litter
  • Grease
  • Food or food waste
  • Bleach or cleaning products that contain bleach
  • Fish

Plumbing professionals recommend flushing only human waste and toilet paper down the toilet to prevent clogs in the toilet or household plumbing. It is a common debate on whether or not to flush most of these listed items down the toilet, but the consensus is that most items expand when flushed, causing them to get stuck to the walls of the pipes. Eventually, this leads to a clog and a backed-up toilet that requires professional help to fix.

Flushing these items a few times may not create a clog but is that a risk worth taking? Plumbing service calls for clogged toilets can reveal that expensive repairs need to be made that could've been prevented by following the tip of only flushing what is meant to be flushed.
