Three Ways To Determine the Cause of Poor Water Pressure

After a long day, there’s nothing better than a hot shower. However, poor water pressure can turn a moment of anticipation into one of disappointment. Thankfully, there are many ways to determine the cause of low water pressure, from checking for hidden water leaks to looking for clogged drains.

Of course, one can always reach out to a water pressure specialist to learn more about repairing their plumbing system. These professionals can render a host of services to remedy any issues.

Take a Quick Look at the Bathroom Plumbing

Usually, when there’s low water pressure, signs point to why. To identify the cause of low water pressure, one may:

  • Check for any leaks: One should look under kitchen counters, toilets, and even outdoor hoses to check for leaks. If water is escaping the plumbing system, this could affect water pressure.
  • Sediment build-up in the water heater: If one has a tank-based water heater, eventually, sediment will build up inside the system. This can cause grinding or hissing sounds coming from the appliance. It can also lead to poor water pressure and create “hard water,” meaning water filled with unwanted minerals and particles. A plumber can use a water softener to address the issue.
  • A valve is turned off: A plumbing system is full of valves, which homeowners can switch on and off to control water flow. For whatever reason, one of the valves might be partially shut off, obstructing water flow.

No matter the cause of poor water pressure, these issues are fixable. There is no need to suffer from less-than-ideal water pressure any longer.

Look for Hidden Leaks leak

Looking for hidden leaks is easier said than done. In some cases, there could be a pipe leak within the home’s walls, making it difficult to identify. Signs of “hidden water leaks” include:

  • Check for water damage: If the ceiling, floor, or walls are discolored (usually with splotches of brown), this could point to a leak within the home itself.
  • Weak drywall: Over time, a leak could eat away at a drywall’s insulation. If one pushes on a wall and it leaves indentations, this could mean the pipe leak is behind that wall.
  • Higher-than-normal utility bills: If a homeowner realizes that their water bill is higher than usual, this could point to a water leak.

These are just a few ways to find water leaks inside the home. A qualified plumbing system can explain more.

Inspect the Showerhead shower head

A homeowner might have wonderful water pressure when using the kitchen sink or flushing the toilet. Yet, taking a shower is a different matter. In that instance, the problem could be with the showerhead.

When inspecting the showerhead for low water pressure issues, they should:

  • Make sure the showerhead is anchored in place
  • Leak for leaks around the showerhead’s base
  • Check the showerhead’s “holes” for kinks or bent pieces
  • Make sure the flow restrictor isn’t closed

One might also try removing the showerhead and then reinstalling it. For whatever reason, this could address the issue.
