Using Eco-logic with Home Plumbing to Go “Green”

Most people across the United States associate March with the color green due to the Irish origins of the popular St. Patrick’s Day holiday. The term green is also associated with being ecologically sound or conserving natural resources; thus these ideas come together quite easily for discussing the basics of water conservation and how easy it is for a household to make a difference in their water consumption. Going green saves the planet and saves money for a homeowner as well.

It’s all in the Appliances

Some of the biggest water consumers in the house may not be the people in a home. Appliances hooked up to the plumbing, such as the washing machine and the dishwasher, can use copious amounts of water. The toilet is also a big part of water usage in any household. Here are some appliances that can improve a home’s water usage.

  •  Efficient Washing Machines: Not all washing machines are equal. Newer ones tend to use less water than their ancestors. The detergent used in these washers is also considered eco-friendly because less of it needs to be used.
  • Tankless Water Heaters: These recent and highly efficient inventions allow water to be heated quickly “on-demand” rather than constantly heating and reheating water until it is ready to be put to good use.
  • Dual-Flush Toilets: Another investment that can conserve water is the dual-flush toilet. These innovative flushers have two buttons, one that uses about half the amount of water of a normal flush and another button for a full flush.

Water-Saving Green Habitssave money

If a household begins to monitor their water usage, they will understand where they need to act more conservatively and where they are doing well. This is a good exercise in mindfulness and saving money and conserving water. Here are a few ideas for daily water conservation:

  • Turn off the sink tap when brushing teeth
  • Take shorter showers
  • Only wash full loads of clothes or dishes
  • Install low-flow showerheads and faucet aerators

Down the Drain: Pollutants that Can Be Avoided

Homeowners are often more concerned about the water coming into their home than the water that is going out of it, but this is yet another area where people can be mindful and eco-friendly. One of the major pollutants in the current water supply is microplastics.

These are plastic pieces that measure half a centimeter or less. A few examples of these include microbeads present in some exfoliating cleansers, toothpaste, and disposal contact lenses. Even clothes made from synthetic fabrics can produce microplastics when washed, and lint is produced from the bits that come off the clothing.

Homeowner should be aware of what is going down their drains and whether or not it will have a lasting impact on the environment.
