Is It the Right Time To Replace the Old Water Heater?

How can homeowners know when it is time for a water heater replacement? No piece of home hardware lasts forever. Water heaters are essential for providing the home with hot water for cleaning and bathing.

Having hot water available on demand is a luxury that is common in most modern homes, and it can be hard to live without it. After around ten years, water heaters need to be replaced, but that number can vary depending on what kind of system it is.

Average Water Heater Lifespan

There are multiple types of water heaters, including electric, gas, and tankless. Tankless water heaters are the most efficient and modern of the options. One of the best things about new tankless water heater installation is that they can last almost twice as long as traditional water heaters.

While electric and gas water heaters tend to last only eight to 12 years, tankless water heaters last up to 20. Electric water heaters have slightly more longevity than gas water heaters, with an average lifespan of up to 15 years.

After around 15 years, almost all traditional style water heaters need to be replaced. Homeowners should be sure to keep up with system maintenance by scheduling annual water heater service appointments to improve the longevity of their system.

Water Heater Leaks

Water heaters should not leak if they are brand new, but the older the system is, the more time the tank may have to corrode internally. Leaks tend to spring up after the water heater is over ten years old.

The natural minerals in water can separate when heating to form solid sediment. During water heater service appointments, they clean the sediment out to prevent corrosion. Eventually, corrosion will create a leak.

When the source of the leak is a broken valve, it may be fixable without replacing the entire water heater. However, if the tank has corroded or cracked, a new water heater installation may be necessary.

Water Heater Will Not Work

Another sign that the water heater is nearing time for replacement is if it takes a long time for hot water to reach the faucet or if there is not an adequate amount of hot water.

There may be a problem with the heating element if the water heater refuses to work at all. The water heater is practically useless without a heating element, which means a replacement will be necessary if the heating element can not be fixed.

One of the reasons why a water heater may be functioning inefficiently is improper installation. Improperly sized water tanks or loose parts can lead to improper function. This is why leaving the installation up to a professional water heater installer is so important.
