Time For Tools Trivia

While many pieces of plumbing equipment grace the truck of a typical plumbing technician, a few stand out as tools that define the industry and are helpful to the professional plumber daily. These three contestants will now be introduced to the studio audience for perusal.

The Powerhouse: The Pipe Auger

drain snakesPipe drills, also known as drain snakes, are plumbing tools with a rotating head on the end of a long, flexible cable that twists through pipes and removes clogs in drain lines. There are several drills powered by manual hand cranks and those made specifically for tough toilet clogs.

Pipe augers come in whatever size is needed, whether small, medium, or large.

  • Top Snakes: These are the smallest pipe snakes. They are meant to be used inside, typically best for bathroom sinks and tub drains. They have about 25 feet of cable to reach tough clogs, but only in the smaller interior home pipes.
  • Medium Drain: This is the all-around auger that technicians can use for kitchens and more giant clogs in exterior drain pipes. They have up to 75 feet of cable.
  • Significant Drain: These machines are the maximum workhorses of this tool. They have powerful electric motors and around 100 feet of heavy-duty cable to battle the most profound and challenging drain main clogs.

The Old Faithful: The Wrench

The wrench has long been associated with the field of plumbing.  If a person looks at plumbing company websites, the vast majority will have some form of a twist in their logo or somewhere on their page. This tool is practically the symbol of the industry because it was one of the original tools of the trade.

Hand tools are still used today when joining pipes and tightening fixtures and joints. Though there are many different types of wrenches, such as the adjustable wrench, the pipe wrench, and the offset wrench, the fact that this tool has been serving plumbers for over one hundred years proves the adage, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

The Protector: Tools for Safety

Plumbing has its own set of hazards for both technicians and homeowners, so proper safety equipment is of utmost importance, just as in any other work.

These tools prevent injury and property damage, but they can also enhance the plumbing technician's ability to do their job. When the job is done right, both the plumbing company and the customer will be happy. Listed below are some examples of safety equipment used daily by the professionals:

  • Hard Hats
  • Safety Goggles
  • Steel-Toed Boots
  • Gloves
  • Masks
  • Work Lights
