Too Hot to Handle: Three Important Facts About Boilers

Think of the boiler as a car – it typically needs a yearly tune-up to keep it performing at its best. Keeping up with the yearly check could save thousands in replacement boilers, parts, and repairs in the future. Continue reading to learn the basics about boilers, maintenance, and ways to save money.

Does It Boil?plumber

Boilers do not heat water in the way most people think. A majority of new-age boilers use a device called a heat exchanger. A heat exchanger is a meld of metal tubes and shells that heat up. Once heated, the heat exchanger begins to heat the pipes. The heated pipes warm the water, which flows throughout other pipes in the house. It's a double boiler!

Boilers are a closed system, which means they always use the leftover water inside as their first hot water option. This keeps it from pulling in new water without effectively using what's already stored inside. It's a self-sufficient recycler!

Energy-efficient boilers burn natural gas or propane fuel, making it an even better option for the home and the environment. The average cost, according to google, runs anywhere from $3,000-$6000. The high-efficiency model comes in at anywhere from $6,000-$11,000.The boiler installation could add another thousand.

However, making the change could be a dollar well spent if done correctly. Energy.gov advises that boilers must be at at least 82% to meet the annual fuel utilization efficiency standards (AFUE). An energy-efficient boiler must be at least 90% to meet the standard. An energy-efficient boiler can save upwards of $500 a year. Check out energy.gov and use the high-efficiency calculator to help determine the potential savings after installation.

Pressure Makes a Diamond!

If the boiler pressure gets too low, it will cause issues with the boiler itself and the central heating system for the home. Mainly it will cause the house to exert more energy trying to warm it. If the pressure gets too high, the boiler overworks. It will either shut down or completely break. Be sure to check with the boilers' manufacturer to determine the boiler pressure.

The water pressure must be correct for the boiler. Without enough water inside the boiler, it can overheat. Ensuring both the boiler and water pressure are in sync can prevent overheating damage and even fire. Routine maintenance can save many headaches and dollars in the future.

Signs a plumber is needed:

  • Leakage
  • It takes too long to heat up
  • If the unit is over 10 years old
  • Making noises
  • Electric/gas bill increases
