3 Tips for Bettering a Home's Indoor Air Quality in 2022

IAQ or indoor air quality is an area of great concern for those professionals in heater and air conditioning maintenance. If indoor air quality is neglected, indoor air can become more polluted than the surrounding outdoor air. Indoor air quality describes how clean or pure the air is within a certain space.

Factors such as humidity, dust, smoke, and VOCs (volatile organic compounds) all contribute to the healthiness of the air indoors. This is especially important if someone has asthma or other chronic lung diseases such as COPD or emphysema. Keeping the high air quality in the home is not a daunting task, and this article will show a few simple steps that can make a huge difference in a home's IAQ.

Changing Air Filters Changes Everythingair filter

All HVAC systems employ air filters in their systems to keep both the unit and the air that it distributes free of pollutants. This benefits the machine by keeping dust out and protecting the home's inhabitants from breathing in said pollutants.

The problem is that the filters can become clogged with dust and other pollutants. An HVAC system's filter needs to be changed every 2 to 3 months to keep a system in its best condition. Advantages of regular filter changing include:

  • Efficiency: With a clean filter, the air conditioning or heating can run without extra effort, conserving energy and saving money
  • Consistency: Temperatures will remain more stable with a machine that is not overworking to pull air through
  • Longer Unit Life: The unit will not wear out as quickly if properly maintained

Keeping up with heater maintenance in the colder months and AC maintenance in the warmer months helps ensure healthy indoor air quality.

Purchase an Air Purifierair purifier

Suppose the traditional filters in a heating and cooling unit are insufficient to keep the indoor air quality to the desired standards. In that case, a homeowner should consider purchasing equipment to clean the air. Whether for a room or the whole house, there are as many options as needs.

  • Room Filters:
    • HEPA Filters: These remove allergens, dust, and other particles from the air.
    • Ion Filters: These pull particles from the air using static electricity.
    • UV Light Filters: This filter is great for killing germs and mold but is less helpful with particles.
  • Whole-Home Filters:
    • Electronic Air Cleaners: These attach to an existing heating or air conditioning system and trap particles missed by the regular filters. They use both HEPA filters and ions.
    • Air-to-Air Exchangers: These cycle old air in the house with new air from the outside.

Dust, Dust Here; Scrub, Scrub There

One of the easiest ways to help keep a place's indoor air quality in a healthy range is regular cleaning. It doesn't take an HVAC expert to know that dusting and vacuuming regularly keep dust out of the air because it is removed from the home. This cleaning will also extend the life of the home's air filters because fewer particles are trapped in them.
