Prevent deck failure by being vigilant about safety checks!

Kansas City, United States - January 26, 2022 / All Weather Decks /

May is Deck Safety Month, but the Kansas City deck builders at All Weather Decks cannot stress enough the importance of checking your deck regularly for structural issues that can lead to failure. While you don’t often hear about it on the news, approximately 500 people are injured each year when the deck they are standing on collapses. This is the reason why we are encouraging every deck owner to check over theirs now before it’s too late.

The deck of your Kansas City home is repeatedly subjected to a wide range of nature’s harshest elements.  Over time, rain and freezing conditions combine with the sun’s searing rays to cause your once strong deck to become a safety hazard. By checking your outdoor living area for signs of failure each season, you are being proactive about protecting yourself and your family from harm.

Prevent deck failure by being vigilant about safety checks!

The experts at All Weather Decks know how much you love your Kansas City deck and want it to be as safe as possible. In addition to being the most decorated Kansas City deck builders, we are also the experts at identifying weaknesses in the structural integrity of decks. We care about the well-being of you and your family, which is why we’re taking the time to teach you what to look for when conducting your own deck safety checks.

Check support posts and beams for rot, splitting, and abnormal movement.

If you notice that your deck’s main support beams are beginning to deteriorate, cordon off the deck immediately and contact an expert to check it out. While you’re waiting for a professional to survey the deck’s condition, do not attempt to walk on the deck and do not allow any friends or family members on it either. Unfortunately, your beloved deck is now a serious safety hazard and needs repaired before it can be trusted as safe.

Closely verify the attachment points between the deck and your home are secure.

If you notice the attachment points joining your deck to your home are failing, get in touch with an expert right away. Avoid walking on it and tell your family it’s off limits until repairs are complete. Any additional weight could cause it to completely break away from the home. If you have anything stored under the deck, cautiously remove these items until the deck is secure.

Check all fasteners, bolts, joist hangers, and other hardware for rust and corrosion.

When you see rust and corrosion on the hardware that’s designed to hold your deck together, this is one of the first warning signs that your deck needs refurbished. While you can still use your outdoor living space, be careful about how many people you allow on your deck at one time because its structural integrity is not 100 percent. If your grill or other heavy object on the deck, it’s a good idea to move these items to a sturdier location until an expert assesses the deck’s condition.

Verify that all railings and guards are sturdy and secure.

People will often lean on deck railings, and they keep young children from stumbling off the deck. To make sure the railings on your deck are strong, push and pull on them. If you feel them shifting, they could be a safety hazard. When your outdoor living space has weak railings, it’s simply not safe for anyone. Your best bet is to get in touch with a deck repair expert to find out if the railings can be fixed or need to be replaced entirely.

Check all stairs and individual steps for damage and deterioration.

The steps of your deck are an important feature you shouldn’t overlook when conducting a safety check. Look for rotting and splitting wood, rusted hardware, and loose boards. Check the railings, too, to make sure they’re tight and can withstand a person’s weight. If any part of the stairs appear to be failing, arrange for a deck repair expert to come out and take a look.

Survey the areas that are subjected to intense heat.

If you have a fire pit or grill on your deck, check the area to make sure there are no burn marks or other heat related damage. If you notice scorching on any of the decking boards, it’s possible that they need to be replaced. You may also want to consider using a heat resistant pad under and around the area to prevent damage from occurring. If you have any questions about how to safely use grills, fire pits, and chimineas on your deck, contact the manufacturer or a trusted Kansas City deck builder.

The safety of your deck is our number one concern!
