3 Ways To Improve Indoor Air Quality in the New Year

The start of a new year is when many people get down to business and work on bettering themselves, their homes, and their overall quality of life. And for anyone who needs a little inspiration for what to work on first, there’s hardly a better place to start than the home’s indoor air quality.

Essentially, air quality is measured by how many and what kinds of pollutants are present in the air - the fewer and less dangerous they are, the higher the air quality. Unfortunately, the air inside most homes contains far more pollutants than homeowners realize. And since poor air quality can lead to discomfort, respiratory issues, or even serious illness, there’s no time like the present to work on improving it. Read on for three simple yet effective ways to do it!

Replace Air Filters Every 3 Months (At Least)filter

The first way to improve the home’s air quality is to change the HVAC air filter before it gets too dirty. The exact air filter replacement schedule will depend on several factors, including:
  • How many people and pets there are in the home
  • Whether or not anyone in the household has allergies or other sensitivities
  • The outdoor air quality (pollution, smoke, and pollen can all affect indoor air quality)

For the average home, every 3 months is a pretty good baseline. But with more occupants, more pets, more respiratory sensitivities, and lower outdoor air quality, it’s a good idea to change the filter more often, even once a month. This is important because the dirtier the filter gets, the less effective it will be at capturing airborne pollutants and the harder it will be for the HVAC unit to circulate air, resulting in higher concentrations of harmful pollutants.

The next way to get rid of pollutants in the home is to use an air purifier of some sort. Like air filters, these capture airborne pollutants. Still, they go one step further by neutralizing biological contaminants like mold, dust mites, harmful bacteria, and even some viruses, typically using ultraviolet light.

There are several different types of air purifiers on the market. Portable purifiers can effectively keep the air in a given space clean by attracting, capturing, and neutralizing pollutants, but they generally only serve one room at a time. Whole-house air purifiers called “air scrubbers” can be integrated with the home’s HVAC system to sanitize the entire home’s air before it is pumped out through the air ducts.

Stay On Top of Household Cleaning

The third way to keep the home’s air quality high is as simple as keeping the place clean. Pollutants like dust and debris tend to hang out on any surfaces they can throughout the house, collecting and getting whipped up when people and pets move around. The home’s air filter will grab some of these particulates, but not all of them.

So homeowners can remove these pollutants themselves by regularly sweeping, mopping, dusting, and vacuuming the house. It may not seem as effective as filter changes or as flashy as an air purifier, but a clean home is really the first line of defense against poor indoor air quality.
