Explains Crowns

FORT WAYNE, United States - January 1, 2022 / Legacy Dental /

If your dentist has told you that you have extensive tooth decay and need a crown, you’re likely wondering how the procedure works and what to expect following your crown placement. Our dentist in Fort Wayne, IN, explains more about what a crown is and how to ensure it stays put once it’s placed!

What Is A Crown?

A crown is a type of dental restoration placed on top of a non-salvageable tooth (due to decay or breakage). It is shaped just like your natural tooth, so it blends seamlessly with your smile. Crowns can last for years when cared for properly and ensure that your tooth is safe from further damage.

What Are They Used For?

Crowns can be used for the following:

  • To protect a weak tooth
  • Cover a root canal
  • Replace a worn tooth
  • To hold a dental bridge in place
  • Cover a tooth with extensive decay or a large filling

Frequently, crowns are made of porcelain or ceramic. In some instances, we can use crowns made out of metal or porcelain-fused-to-metal. Our dentist will be able to help determine which material is best for you.

If It Comes Off

While your permanent crown is being made, our dentist will have you wear a temporary crown. The temporary crown may come off if you eat hard or sticky foods — simply come to our office, and we will put it back on!

However, a properly placed permanent crown should not come off after it’s cemented. In some cases, the crown may be ill-fitting, too big, or the tooth may not have been appropriately shaped. If your permanent crown comes off, it’s critical that you come to our office so we can assess what went wrong and fix it so you can enjoy a full smile.
