Heat Pumps Make Heating the Home Easy

Having a quality heat pump is more than a warm house; it’s lower energy bills. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reports that homeowners will see a marked increase in their energy bills this winter. Depending on what heat source they use, they can expect to see their energy bills rise from six to 54 percent.

To combat freezing temperatures and higher energy costs, homeowners should consider the value of installing a heat pump. These devices use less electricity and natural gas than other heat sources, and they also have an impressive lifespan. This holiday season, heat pump installation may be the best gift of all.

What Is a Heat Pump? How Do They Work?

Indoor portion of a heat pumpMany homeowners see the words “furnace” and “heat pump” and assume they mean the same thing. This is actually a common misconception–– as these appliances are two completely different things.

A furnace generates its own heat by blowing heated air through a home’s vents. A heat pump draws air from outside and, using a combination of air pressure and refrigerant, blows warm air through the house. Here's a basic overview of how air-source heat pumps work:

  1. The heat pump draws air from the outside and cools it using a refrigerant.
  2. The air turns into a cold gas.
  3. The heat pump applies pressure onto the cold gas, making it hotter.
  4. The indoor unit cools the hot gas and turns it into a warm liquid.
  5. The warm liquid is relieved of pressure, turning into a cold liquid.
  6. The process starts all over again.

These steps are different for geothermal heat pumps, as these devices rely on heat from the ground rather than heat from the air.

The Many Benefits of Ductless Heating

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the benefits of ductless heating include:

  • Size: These appliances are generally smaller than heat pumps that rely on ducts. Homeowners can also place them anywhere, such as in rooms where duct installation isn’t feasible.
  • Minimal energy losses: Duct heat pumps lose about 30 percent of their energy when traveling through the vents. Ductless heating appliances don’t have this problem; they minimize energy loss and, ultimately lower heating costs.
  • Flexibility: Homeowners don’t have to install ductless heat pumps in certain areas. They can be suspended from ceilings, tucked into tight corners, and even hung high on the wall. Ideally, homeowners should consider having their heat pumps close to the ground since warm air travels upward.

A Functioning Heat Pump Means Low Energy Bills

Piggy bank with coins around itAs noted, the EIA says that homeowners will likely encounter higher energy bills this winter. This is because more people now work from home, avoid crowded places, and do holiday shopping online. Homeowners can lower their energy bills by:

  • Consulting a heat pump service: A certified professional can examine one’s heat pump and address any energy-wasting issues, such as leaks.
  • Considering heat pump repair: If a homeowner notices less-than-ideal temperatures, strange noises coming from the heat pump, and suspiciously high energy bills, their system likely needs repairs. While it can be daunting to call in a professional, doing so could mean the difference between a working heater and a hundred-dollar-plus energy bill.
  • Installing a heat pump: CNET reports that heat pumps are more energy-efficient than most furnaces. Because they don’t generate their own heat (and instead regulate temperature), they prove their value almost immediately.
